Hi
I had a recent quote for a replacement boiler , installer is not vat registered and suggested that I pay for boiler and other bits directly, either to the source that he uses or I can source my own.
So I would pay the merchant directly and the boiler would be delivered to me directly.
just wondered , does this sound ok, are there any pitfalls doing it this way? thanks

Have you had any quotations from VAT registered installers? If so how much cheaper is the non vat one?

I have had other quotes, this is not really any cheaper bearing in mind there is no VAT
Also 2nd floor flat , he will seal flue from inside but not from the outside, he obviously can't /won't climb a ladder and didn't mention scaffolding, is that ok?
Thanks

If you are happy with the guy and know his work and reputation then not a problem. Bear in mind if you "supply" the installer can fit and forget and you don't have much recourse if you have any problems.

Agree, any problem found is between you and the manufacture, then if the manufacture blames the installer where does that leave you!

I wouldn`t like the outside left unfinished either.

I personally think any business that provides controlled building services eg. gas, electrical etc should be VAT reg as part of their conditions of registration - a level playing field. Are the VAT savings ever passed on - I doubt it, the same rates are charged

Something like that I'd get done by somebody that will take care of it all. Safer for you. Maybe they should stick to replacing taps.

You are paying VAT on all the parts you buy so your savings are what the VAT element of his labour bill would have been. And as other have said, who supplies the service guarantee.

These are good points that u all raise, I think that I will look for an installer that does it all.

Thanks for your help

I am not VAT registered because I am on the wind down as far as work rate is concerned and I don't come anywhere near the threshold but that doesn't mean I don't supply a full years guarantee on all my work, installations included and will provide support for my customers if and when that is required within that framework. In fact the support is a main part of the service offered to my customers, even when they source the materials themselves. Just because I'm not VAT registered doesn't mean the work is any less professional nor supported.

A lot of my customers these days are more than happy with sourcing their materials themselves and I am happy to let them do that as a lot of them are very internet savvy and feel happier when they are in control, they are also happier when they can get the materials at cost.

I charge a reasonable rate as far as labour is concerned to cover my work (without VAT) and if the customer is happy with that then fair enough, doesn't mean the work is any less in quality as a VAT registered business.

There wouldn't be any comeback to you as far as the tax man is concerned if you do it this way. Whether it comes back to bite him is a different matter, but not really your concern, and whether it's ethical is another consideration again...

There's nothing unethical about "A" buying equipment and "B" fitting it and charging for his time. Or were you implying that non-VAT contractors (Mr "B") are not declaring any 'cash-jobs' through their books.

I'm with Madrab on this. It's my workmanship that I guarantee. I'll always make the first visit if a boiler packs up and make the initial call to book a service engineer.
I like to source and let the customer pay my merchant direct or any other trades I use.
I state in my quote that if there is any problem I will deal with it.

There have been times when I have been more expensive competing with vat company's. But my service and installation is the value added Its just not Tax.

I dont see a problem with it, too many people these days straight on to sites like Ebay saying I could have got that for this price, well do it and I will fit it, but dont be looking for me to swap it ot for free if it fails
