Hi,

In the past few months, we have noticed a smell coming out of the boiler cupboard-similar to sewage smell/rotten eggs.
We have checked around for leaks etc and its all dry around the boiler, above, behind the cupboards. We are just puzzled by it and not sure who should we get in touch with to help us.

Thank you
Monika

When was the boiler last serviced? Gas and rotten eggs smell sometimes go together.

The rotten egg/sulphur odour that plagues many boilers and water heaters is caused by anaerobic bacteria, which commonly grow in the magnesium and aluminum parts of both pieces of equipment. These parts, called sacrificial anodes, need to be replaced from time to time.

Thank you.
The boiler has been serviced last autumn.
I should have also mentioned that the smell is much stronger when it's raining. Not sure if this is coincidence or something more relevant.
Thank you

You haven't painted a very detailed picture of its location and environment. Not trying to be obtuse but (there's always a but)...

1. Do you live in or near a sewage farm?
2. Do you have a condensing boiler? (Its make and model, or even an idea of its age will enable others to determine this)
3. Does the dog sleep near the boiler, and have you changed its food recently?:D
4. Have you noticed this smell because you have spent more time at home recently?
5. Have you noticed this smell since you gave the cleaner the boot?

Now for some more serious ideas...

4. Is there a drain pipe from the boiler, leading into a larger drain pipe?
5. If so, does this larger pipe have a trap (or 'U' bend) within the cupboard.
6. Is the boiler cupboard on the ground floor?
7. Is the house older than 50 years?
8. Is the boiler floor mounted?
9. Have you been using the boiler for hot water generation during this time?
10. Have you been using the boiler for central heating during this time?
11. Is there a toilet/WC in a roof directly above the boiler cupboard?
12. Is there a foul drain near to the boiler cupboard, inside or outside the house?
13. Have you already checked for blocked drains?

The answers to these may shed some light on the cause of the stink...
