I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which I use for drone control only.
Thought I might add a sim card for emergencies.
This won't get any regular use, what is the best buy for the job please.

PAYG from Tesco is good value, and the customer service is better than you'd expect.

My Australian BiL has one for his annual trips, it keeps live during months of disuse, and when he lost his phone, the desk in the supermarket arranged a new SIM with the same phone no. as he was able to pass their security checks.

When somebody recently died who had a mobile Tesco phone, I kept paying it for a couple of months so I could answer and inform any callers or texts. When I notified Tesco they stopped billing, ran the service up to the end of the month, and wrote off the outstanding balance on the phone.

SIM cards need to be used on a regular basis or they can get cut off. It's a common complaint with emergency mobile phones.

This might be for you...

Only needs a £10 top up every 120 days.

Tariffs

Enough data at 1p per MB for drone/controller firmware updates as well.

Thanks E, I saw that and wondered if there were any snags, glad you agree it looks OK.

Giff Gaff, use it in my tracker, just top up with some credit and use it to make a call every 6 months. Top as necessary to stay in credit.

Is it just data you need or 3/4G?

Another vote for giffgaff.
I have one in my note 1, for occasional use.
As long as you call it every 6 months it still stays on the network.

I keep an old phone permanently strapped into the drone controller cradle as it's a bit fiddly connecting and disconnecting my main phone!

I have found that in order to fly sometimes an update is required, so having that extra sim is worth £2.50 a month imo.

Never really seen a drone up close myself until we went to our friends place in Sardinia. His place is totally secluded and up on the hills outside a village called Modolo. Anyway, one night one of the blokes from the village brought a drone up and flew it from his villa to the village and back (that you can just about see the village in the picture) which was about a mile or more away. It was bloody fast plus it had a camera on it too and the clarity was amazing! I was surprised that the controls worked at that distance too. Of course, I immediately decided I wanted one but by the time I got home I had calmed down a bit and realised I wouldn’t have nowhere to fly it. Oh well, the idea was good while it lasted.

UK regulations for drones are quite strict now so not as much fun to fly as it was when they were a novelty.

I got some great shots of Gatwick a year or so back.
