I have an extension with an outside weatherboarded wall.

Behind the weatherboards are 50mm of insulation boards, and then a 215mm thick block wall.

If I want to hang something that is quite heavy on the weatherbosrds, I would like to get a fixing into the block wall.

Are self tapping screws an option and if so what size (length and thickness) should I get?

Are the boards attached at intervals to battens which could take shorter fixings?

Blup

Battens are difficult to identify.

Shame that self tappers are only for metal and plastic.

Thanks Btup and Woody.

Self tapping screws are hard and sharp so they can cut their own threads.
They will hold well in timber if that’s what you want to use.

Looks good Blup.

I recall a builder who found that a 2"x2" wood frame was not secured enough to a wall. He didn't dismantle it.

All he did was to drill through the wood with a wood drill. Changed to a masonry drill and drilled further. He then withdrew the bit and got hold of a 3 1/2" screw and put a rawlplug on the end and tapped it home. He then screwed it up.

By the way he had to use force to finish with the screwdriver, so it was fixed pretty securely.
