Hi all,
Trying to get bits ready to felt, batten and slate roof extension but just measured up the battens on existing roof and they are 15/16mm wide by 50mm as opposed to the 25x50 I need to use.
The house is old and build pretty badly built but obviously will be difficult sourcing these(16x50) even if they are legal (which I doubt)
Anyone got any idea how I can get around this? There will be one long section which will have old and new battens meeting each other and so won’t be flush, don’t want to notch out the rafters as they will then loose strength and don’t want to pull all the old tiles off and redo the battens...
Any ideas?
Cheers.

15/16 wide - lying on the rafter ? then 50mm standing off the rafter ? or 50mm lying and 15mm standing off. Do you need to take 25mm down to 15mm ?

19 x 50 is easy to source. it was common to find this on older slate roofs (2 x 3/4.)

You mention slates and then tiles? Thiner than 19 mm batten with slates is hard going and a no go.

Ahha. It’s 50 on the rafter, 15/16mm “sticking up”.
Sorry that was Saturday in the Sun writing, it’s a full 20”x10” slate all over, not tiles.
I expect it to be 19mm then, possibly bad measurement but am sure I can work 19mm rather than 25mm!
I’ve checked buildbase, wickes and roofingsuperstore as general ‘go tos’ but not even a mention, best I can get are 19x38 counter Battens?

thanks
Edd

Can't a timber merchant rip them down?
Or buy/hire a saw to do it

Go to a roofing merchant.
It should be readily available treated

Wickes etc are unlikely to stock it
Most builders merchants won't either .

19 x 38 is no good for your slate roof

Cheers. Will head to a roof merchant, Mabee a reclamation yard and get some 19x50.
Knew I could count on the Diynot contributers.

I have seen 2"x 3/4 used but its very rare up this way, we are 16" rafter centres.

2 x 3/4 was the norm many years ago now its 25 x 50 up to 600 centres.
The average normal house would be 400 centres ... the 600 would have been chucked up estates.

Yes I know what the new reg's are! I thought ( we )plus the op were talking about old houses.

Have you never watched coronation st? loads and loads of terraced housing up this way. (y)

I think i did ...once, They rarely go to work pee it up in the rovers every day and eat out at the Bistro all the time.
