Eat out to help out.

I think people are getting used to not eating out and this has a big impact on the economy.

^^^^This.

In this city, a significant number of restaurants at all price points (even Michelin starred) have already announced permanent closure or have not re-opened and don't appear to have any plans to do so.

Amazon needs to be broken up.

A friend of mine works as a waitress in Pizza Express, she normally does 40-50hours a week, she's restarted capped at 20 hours. She has rent and bills to pay and no savings. Most Gym staff I know have gone back on min wage.

As usual a very confused message, on one hand the gov are talking about reclosing pubs/eateries etc so as they can reopen schools, (hence they know there is a danger in these places) - on the other hand they're enticing us out with a bit of free money.

we're not going out anytime soon :(

With regard to the italicised part of Munroist's post, I wonder if it is "the truth that cannot be spoken".........
...... in that the government expect the kids to spread infection among themselves (and then onto their parents / guardians), and this is acceptable "collateral damage". But closing the pubs is some attempt at reducing adult - to - adult spread....

We might have new problems if all restaurants and schools open.
At the moment a local wholesaler is supplying fresh food to those isolating (including my parents, who have not had anybody in, or left the village, since lockdown in March). But if everything starts again, this service will probably stop, meaning they need to fight over delivery slots, or venture out for essentials (they could ask me, but they will probably not want to inconvenience me!).

Also, many people are volunteering while furloughed, delivery food and medication. But when they are told to go back to work, their services will have to stop too.

Going to get tricky...

If they were shielding (rather than isolating), then they are now able to go out. Shops still have shopping hours for elderly and vulnerable customers. Delivery slots and Click and Collect slots are easily available now. If they're choosing to still stay indoors, then they should make suitable arrangements for themselves. The Government can't carry everybody for ever.

That might be true, but many people are not going to risk it.
Infection rates are increasing, still no vaccine - if you have serious medical conditions you'd be mad to go out.
And I am not suggesting that the government carries everybody, just pointing out that as soon as it stops, then obviously cases will increase if people who have been asked to shield have no choice but the leave the house.

I'm basically shielding because My wife and I meet up with her mum and her dad in a care home.

We do Tesco click and collect, don't go to any shops, pubs, restaurants etc.....but I do think these things should be open if possible and I don't have any argument with the £10 voucher scheme.....even is rather contradictory to other advice.

I haven't been to a restaurant or a bar since the lock down began 13th March.
I don't intend to any time soon, bearing in mind that visits to a restaurant at least twice per week would have been normal.

The only socialising has been one funeral (not Covid related) and one BBQ two weeks ago, with limited number of guests, and hand-sanitiser used on entry.

Best of fun!

I was invited out last Friday, it was something that I couldn't refuse to attend.
The place was heaving. Apart from the sanitiser on entry and the arrows on the floor, it was just like a normal pub/restaurant on a Friday night, packed full of strangers eating and drinking with no face masks or any other sign of social distancing.
Good!
I really don't understand people who get exited in saying "the new normal" like if it was the best thing that ever happened to them.
We're humans, not animals.
We need social contact, physical contact, otherwise we might just be another breed of furry friends.

Our local Indian is taking part so I might see if I can persuade Mrs Mottie to go along to help 'em out.
Well, that was a big fat NO. She's still not comfortable about going out and eating in. She wants to find somewhere to eat out, out!

I wonder if the restaurant would be ok with you going out for a meal, then packing up leftovers so you can take them home if you had to leave unexpectedly quickly. They do need business but I wouldn't be happy to hang around out at a restaurant.

She's better than me - I'm not comfortable about eating out out. I just worry too much about getting it and passing it onto my dad in law and at nearly 91, with a few ailments he probably wouldn't survive it.
