New roof just done (is this a bodged job?)

I just had my roof redone (tiles, felt and battens); does it look ok? (I know they run out of the "side bits" (dry verge?) which will be installed today). What are the white marks at the bottom of the tiles?

I am not an expert; I called them to have a look at a leak I had (which was by the chimney stack by the way, on the short side visible in the 3rd picture); flashing was my obvious suspect but they said the leak could have been coming from anywhere and that new felt, battens and tiles were required.

In my mind I thought they were going to replace the flashing as well, but looking at the quote I had it wasn't mentioned and they have reused the old one

The properties across the street are not that old, and I wonder why your tiles needed replacing if your house is the same age?

The staining on the stack indicates a problem with water penetration from the flaunching or the oversail capping, and that could be a source of your damp issue. Either way it needs dealing with now. And the brickwork should be checked while they are at it. And remove (or renew) that rusty old aerial mast before it falls off.

Whether the flashing is OK or not needs investigation. If the roof was only from the 70's, then the lead may well be OK, but otherwise it may as well be changed now if its nearing life end.

As to the quality of the tiling, others may want to comment on that. What is evident is that some are bonded and some are not (the joints between tiles are in line) and that is wrong. And the way its finished at the top near the ridge is crap with that top row of tiles. Either lazy or clueless roofers.

Also did you apply to building control for their approval? And your loft insulation upgraded?

My row of houses is older, from the 60s, slightly different style from the ones you see (no bricks visible on my external walls)

Building control? Do you need approval for renewing a roof? I need to sort the insulation myself, it was missing in some places expecially near the edges which they have added, but there is still something to do

It's a lash up.
Tile gauge should be even .. for a start.
Bonds...I doubt they know what that is. even though there are plenty around to copy..
White marks to be fair are from pallet stacking and moving it will disappear

All roof off = building control.
Although the main interest would be insulation in this case

Tell your neighbours not to use them. It happens on estates everyone copies their neighbours

Not doing the lead flashing on chimneys when having a reroof is a bit like not having the clutch done when you are having the gearbox changed. Good luck.

Did you find them on one of those sites that claims that it will only put you in contact with top quality tradesmen?

I am not a roofer so I cannot comment on their tiling but the ridge caps? Are they sealed? And why is it that the first two courses of tiles at the back are staggered but not on the front?
