Woodworm in Garage

Hi,
I have woodworm in the beams in the garage, so I was going to get some woodworm killer from somewhere like Screwfix and do it myself. Should I just spray it on, or best using paint brush?
Should I cover things over that are in the Garage or doesn't it drip much?
Might do the same to the loft, no signs of woodworm but the beams are old (the bungalow was built in 1962), so I'm thinking best treat them, got loads of stuff in the loft, don't really want to empty loft so same question about covering over. I guess spray in the the loft is probably best, try and get in the eves.

Do you know if the woodworm is current or old?

old exit holes arent an indication of current infestation, however evidence of fresh frass is.

you can either spray or use a brush to splash it on and work it -although you will struggle more to get it in to nooks and crannies
its pretty liquid, like white sprit

Not an expert. However, I am buying an older house with historical woodworm and found out about BS7913.

Ok, so your garage roof isn't a historical building but curious info nonetheless:

The new British Standard in Old Building Conservation - BS7913 states categorically that timber treatment should not be undertaken. It clearly states that the best treatment for beetle infestation or rot is to DRY THE TIMBER OUT!

Beetle will only attack timber if it is above about 17% total moisture content. That's quite wet. The same goes for actual rot by fungus - timber is simply NOT going to rot if it is kept dry.

Many years ago I helped convert an old house, and we lifted and soaked all the floorboards in a bath of woodworm treatment, and, sprayed all the joists.

Horrible job. In light of BS7913, I wouldn't treat again.

It's old, when we bought the bungalow the survey said that we should get it treated, I haven't done it yet, I did think about replacing the beams and the asbestos roof, but the survey said to leave the roof alone, it's fine as long as it's not disturbed, and I guess it would cost @ £3k.

I covered everything with cheap disposable sheets, as it did drop and leave an oily mess.

18 months on, no signs of woodworm....
