Electric boilers

Ok, I will stick with gas then.
Just thought that as the boiler is very old and needs changing move over to elec as looks like gas boilers will be phased out over the coming years
Thanks

Gas boilers won't be phased out for anything except new builds. About 12 years ago we were told gas boilers would be gone by 2015. That didn't happen. There's a lot of work going on with testing hydrogen blends in the gas network, and I think it's much more likely that we'll shift to hydrogen than electric. We simply don't have the power generation capacity to move everyone to electric, and we're not building enough power stations to achieve that aim

an output of 12kw and ran on about 4.5 kw
That is only possible with a heat pump.

An electric boiler output is the same as the input, so if you need 12kW, then it's a 12kW boiler, which will cost you £2 for every hour it's switched on - and that's assuming the electrical supply is actually suitable for such a load, and you get permission from the network operator to install it.

Currently, a lot of our electricity is generated from gas-burning power stations, which is inefficient use of energy, so switching to electricity would not actually help.

The government contracts for the Chinese/French nuclear power stations being built in Britain have fixed the price so it will always be higher than the cost from other sources. This was done to incentivise the contractors to build these costly white elephants at the expense of this nation's taxpayers and consumers. Blame our ruling classes.

Wind and solar are eroding the proportion, and are now cheaper even without subsidies.

Maybe a time will come when it makes sense. Or maybe not, if we can synthesise a gas using solar or wind power.

Thanks all for your interesting points and yes, Gasguru , clueless politicians

For the moment I shall carry on with my 40 year old Glowworm Spacesaver Mk1.

The crap about gas boilers being phased out, it is total rubbish , it is the same as Condensing boilers , all to appease the green brigade and Politicians, a standard efficiency boiler might produce more CO2 than a condensing boiler , and I stress might , but a Condensing boiler will definately produce more CO than SE boiler, boiler manus come out with lots of figures about how cheaper to run a Condensing boiler is, unless it is a new build and pipe sizing and rad sizing is correct this is total tosh, and it is new builds that this crap is aimed at

And remember you quoted heat pump efficiencies are rarely achieved...the COP coefficient of performance varies considerably.
Heating your hot water in the middle of winter and the COPs down to 2, heating radiators at 50 degree perhaps down to2.5 or 3.
With considerable insulation/draughprrofing, closely spaced underfloor pipework and running the system at a very low temperature will a high COP figure be achieved.
Now add in the extortionate repair costs and these things are often futile...it's more about manufacturers profit than being green.

Today, wind power is making more electricity than either Nuclear or Gas.

And it makes nothing when the wind doesn't blow...
Chinas ever expanding air conditioner use alone uses 50% more electricity per year than the whole of the UK electrical demand per year...our efforts to reduce CO2 emisions are futile.
