Understood.
As it happens there's been no response to my approaches to local gas fitters/ plumbers thus far. So either they're too busy, they're on holiday, or the job is considered too small to be worth their time. Looks like BG are my only option.

How much does it cost to run your present heater? How long will £600 worth of gas last ?

I know....its either give the money to BG to pay for gas used by the wall heater, or give it to them to pay for the rad. The 600 quid, if used to pay for gas, would probably last longer than we're likely to stay in this house.
On the face of it a no brainer, and yet I like the idea of running the heating in the front room with the rest of the system. .
Go to your local plumbers merchants and ask if they could recommend anyone to do your job

Agreed, and with the new scheme coming in you may get a grant for any work.
That's a good idea. I'll decide over the weekend whether to spend the money on the rad, or whether to put it towards my daughter's house-buying fund and use the gas wall heater more often. Its a journey, is this DIY thing.

Well, I got the job done at just over half the cost quoted by BG. It was a local fitter, ironically recommended by a BG chap who did other work for me.
The pipework from the loft to the rads drops down the corner angles of the rooms because we have concrete floors. He started by drilling through the wall of the lounge to take the pipework through a fitted wardrobe and to the wall where the radiator was to be fitted. However, because the spare bedroom is a former garage and corner of the room is slightly offset from the corresponding corner in the main building, on his first attempt the drill bit ended up in fresh air, and went straight through the external gas pipe. He repaired that right away, obviously.
Only other problem was the appearance of two holes in our 2 year old carpet where he dropped some hot solder, but being in a corner it'll be hidden under furniture anyhow. He was very apologetic when I pointed this out, and offered me a free boiler service to compensate, but we have ours done by BG so I declined. Notwithstanding the above we're fairly satisfied with the job, and thanks again for advice provided.

Should of gone with BG, you would of got a new carpet and compensation.
