Solid oak floor over tiles

Hi there
My parents have been given 15sq m of solid oak floor. On removing the carpet we have found the floor is covered in tiles - possibly called Marley tiles??? Thin, brittle looking tiles. The plan was to stick the floor down, I’m guessing this may not be an option? Can anyone point me in the right direction with my options and which products would be most suitable to avoid taking up the tiles.

Is it solid wood or engineered wood?
You can’t glue solid wood onto the tiles so they have to come up and a moisture test done

Thank you. They’ve actually been given 15m of solid and 15m of solid engineered so if there’s a difference they could use either?

Engineered you can float on a underlay so you could put that over the tiles with a decent underlay with a built in damp proof sheet

Thanks Daz. Appreciate the advice. Why is a damp proof needed? Are the tiles likely damp proofing the concrete floor? Just out of interest, why the difference between solid and engineered? Sorry for all the quest, I just like to understand what I’m doing.

Also, what are the implications if I take up the tiles? Would I need to put a DPM down?

The way we do it would be take the tiles up
Grind off the old adhesive
Epoxy dpm like ardex DPM1c m you NA glue straight to it or use a smoothing compound like ardex k39

Thanks, I think you may be a victim of predictive text there. Just to clarify - tiles up, liquid DPM down, levelling compound down then glue solid oak floor down. Is this what you’re suggesting?

Yes mate. Try take the tiles up in full tiles if possible and double bag them. They could contain a small amount of asbestos but you are allowed to uplift them.

Cheers. Just another Couple of thoughts and I’ll try not to bother you any further.... what about sticking some 3mm ply over the tiles and installing the solid oak floor as per usual - (adhesive for ply onto tiles to be ascertained).

Alternatively, could the solid oak float on the tiles if I glued the tongues and grooves.

Don't Float Solid wood, it will have issues with movement and gapping etc.

No amount of ply over the tiles will resolve moisture issues.

Here’s an update for anyone else talking this job, I spoke to Bostik who recommended using a polymer based adhesive such as Bostik Laybond which is applied directly to the tiles using a b3 adhesive spreader. I followed the instructions on their data sheet and the floors gone down a treat.

thanks, but there is no moisture issue. The floor has a bitumen damp course under said tiles.
