Hi,

A number of hinges in my house have this horrible sticky black stuff coming out of them... I'm tempted to remove them and soak in white spirit etc. to get rid of it. However, I presume this is some kind of lubricant and may run into problems when re-fitting. Any ideas?

Cheers...

Its dust and muck mixed with the lubricant that's slowly seeped out of the hinge.

Just clean up the outside with white spirit or thinners. I wouldn't soak the hinges because you'll also strip all the lubrication out of the inside of the hinge where its needed.

OK, thanks... That makes sense. I got the idea of soaking them in thinners as a decorator told me he used to do this to get rid of old paint :)

Snap, so have mine. It is just lubricant mixed with worn metal from the hinge plus pin. Just wipe it off with a rag soaked in a little WD40 or similar solution. Don't take them off and soak the whole hinge, they do need a trace of lube left inside them.
