Hey all, If you have a Woddburning/MultiFuel solid fuel stove in a lounge, are you allowed to have a flue damper/near full blockage on flue to reduce or prevent air movement when its not in use?

Doing heatloss calculations on the house at the minute and its a significant difference having an open flue in the lounge, would like a stove but more as a backup for if theres a power cut, not for day to day use.

Yes you can have a flue damper (they're fairly inportant in regulating the woodburner). Usually with woodburners you'd put a liner up the flue & close the rest of the opening with a register plate, so the draught all goes through the woodburner. If you aren't using it, close the damper & all the door vents and thats most of your draught gone. Not much you can do about the big hole in the wall required these days to ensure sufficient air supply.

It's an old sandstone chimney so would definetly be needing lined.

Is it still the case that 5kw or below and you dont need a permanent air vent?

Also I was under the impression that the newer solid fuel burners didnt have fully closable vents on them to reduce people having them on a simmer and producing more smoke?

Not sure about the <5kw thing, nor about modern woodburners. Approved Docs would probably answer the first...as for the second, if your stove is mostly decorative there's nowt stopping you ramming some rockwool into the inspection plate on the flue, you'll sharp notice if you light the thing with the bung still in :)
