Replace EV or just get a new boiler?

Hi

We have a Halstead Ace combi boiler in our place that we've been in for 12 years (it was already there). It seems to need the EV replacing as I repressurised it last year but I'm still facing the same problem now. The boiler drops to about 0.5/0.6 bar and works away happily but if you fill it from the mains to 1.2 bar as recommended after time will eventually drop back to 0.5/0.6 bar.

It's really difficult to get to the EV as it's at the back of the boiler, so the question is should I get it the EV replaced in situ or even get an external EV or should I just go ahead and get a new boiler? I hear WB or Viessmann Combi's could be suitably decent.

Cheers
K

Are you repressurising the expansion vessel correctly ? you dont need a new boiler

Yeah, I believe so, follow the instructions I got on here last year. Release the water from the system so the boiler shows 0.0 bar, pump the EV which expels the water, drain the water, pump again, drain again, pump again untill all water out of the EV then fill to I think it was 0.8bar, maybe 1.0 bar, then refill the system with water to 1.2 bar.

It did work perfectly and stopped the issue that I was having with the pressure going up to 2.4bar when hot before cutting out

previous thread which I followed

Seems silly to replace a whole boiler for want of a new expansion vessel. That's like buying a new car because your tyres have worn out

Is it easy to fit a new one then? For some reason I thought the whole boiler had to come off the wall to replace the one on a Halstead Ace High

is the pressure rising when the heating is on ? and if it is, what to ?

not had the heating on tbh. As it stands the heating is fine but I know that there's something wrong, as I say the boiler seems happy enough with the cold pressure at around0.5/0.6 bar on the boiler. I don't think it was going much above 1.6 when it was hot and then cuts out automatically. If I were to put more water into the system so that the cold pressure of the boiler was the recommended 1.2 bar then the boiler would go up to something like 2.6bar before it cut out automatically, obviously this is too much

Really, what a ball ache, but cheaper than a new boiler for sure. Suppose it'll be easier 2nd time around.

just to mention, I've never seen anyone else do this when they've come to service the boiler lol

Vessels need re-charging every year.
Remember Glen Dimplex bought Halstead back in 2004 AFAIR and several years late then ceased production altogether.
In typical GD fashion what spares are available are often extortionate so you might want to check the availabilty and price.
I'd be thinking of a new boiler for security.

Welcome to our world so many poke and go cowboys, TBH most wouldnt know how to
I found one guy who knew about Halstead Boilers, Mike Prideaux - Winchester, (after having a checkatrade Poke and Go guy do just that) do some work on it a while back (new pump), I think he's retired know though so it puts me back at the risk of getting someone with no clue. I figured at least if I got WB boiler there'd be an easier chance of finding someone who knew about them.

I'll give the recharge a bash again and see if it holds throughout the winter.

Cheers Ian

After you re-charge it , put some soapy water on the shraeder valve and see if it is passing, that is the usual culprit

A little tip, if you have silicon grease, put a little dab on the schraeder vavle before pumping up the vessel, when you pump the vessel the silicon lubes the rubber seal on the schraeder and stops it from leaking
