Air vent - needed??

Hello,
I’ve got an air vent on the wall in my spare room, do I need it or can I brick it up? House has central heating. Thanks in advance

Where is the boiler?

The boiler is in the kitchen at ground level with an exhaust straight outside

If the room is heated & never gets steamed up when using bathroom then I would say no you do not need it. If it does steam up then leave it. I blocked all ours up 20 odd years ago & it has never caused a problem but we do not have any problems with condensation.

Great, thanks. It’s been covered by a makeshift built in wardrobe for years prior to me moving here. I’ve just knocked the wardrobe out and discovered it. Thought I’d best get some advice before blocking it up.

If it's behind a wardrobe I would keep it. Behind a wardrobe is a prime candidate for condensation induced mildew and mould because there is no air circulation. The vent may well be keeping the area fresh. If the wardrobe is not being replaced then maybe block it up.

Many of the damp problems in older houses are caused by lack of ventilation.

May I suggest that you seal the event up for now. Use a heavy (i.e. thick) poly bag 'duct' taped the the event edges. Leave for the winter and check regularly for any signs of damp. If you don't get any damp then permanently seal the event up.
