Valve on unvented cylinder hot outlet

Is or isn’t this hazardous?

This was pointed out to me today when having an unvented cylinder check carried out. There’s a lever valve at the top of the cylinder on it’s hot outlet.

I couldn’t say why it was put there, and I appreciate it’s unusual, but is it in any way dangerous? My argument would be that it’s not much different to the hot bath tap two metres away.

Annoyingly I think the PRV is now dripping after this check. Does that sometimes happen when they’ve been opened to check them?

I felt I was going to get a clean bill of health but now feel a bit annoyed at the outcome of the check. It was noted that there was a drip but of course not that it wasn’t dripping before!

I wasn’t given any real instructions on whether those must or mustn’t be remedied. I’d say they’ve been listed like MoT advisories.

No it’s fine to have valve off the top of the cylinder.

He sort of backed down a bit. Then proceeded to write in his report that it should really be changed..

Yes, the valve sometimes doesn't seal again properly, usually when it's older. Less likely on unvented as the water is clean but over time the seal can harden if it hasn't been checked every year and they can then drip.

If it continues to drip then yes. It needs lifted a few more times to see if it will seal back up as they sometimes do, if not then yes it should swapped out.
