Ever thought about how our forefathers made those fancy dado rails and suchlike? With a plane of course. :rolleyes:

The thing itself is a work of art, and I can't imagine using it all day and sharpening that blade many times a day too.

Oh yes. Still have a set of moulding planes. As you say - 'fun' to sharpen!
 
I occasionally use moulding planes - mostly hollows and rounds. That's a beast - have you tried actually using it? I think you'd need to choose your timber very carefully because I bet it's a pig to control.

The guy who mounted the blade into a spinning cutter on a shaft was a lot smarter.
Well least ways until he thought of the correct method to stop it flying out and embedding itself in the operator.
