Be better having the A/C gas changed professionally!Sure, I agree....still, I stick one of these a year into a mates 02 Izuzu Trooper and away it goes for another 12 months! I don't pay that much for it though.

I had half a canister left from my old Meriva that I used to give a little top up now and again. I put it in the Peugeot, it was enough to determine that the condenser was kaput but otherwise the system was working.
We got a condenser for about £50, another £50 for gas and the job’s a good un.

Well took car back to same mechanic and he did a Dye test and said the evaporator is finished and showed me where the dye had leaked onto the ground. Said it would be £350 to repair. I didnt get my £60.00 back though. What are peoples thoughts?

The evaporator is pretty much inside the cabin and probably more likely to leak into the footwell area.
Unless, it was coming from the drain?
If the mechanic used a machine to fill your system, the machine is automatic and won't refill the system with gas unless it can pull and maintain a vacuum to determine that the system is gas tight. Its quite possible that your system has just completely failed after it was refilled.

The trouble is with all these quick re-gas companies is that a 20 minute vacuum leak down test is just not long enough. It'll highlight a larger leak but smaller leaks won't be highlighted. Ideally you'd pull a vacuum on it and then leave for 24-48 hours to see if the pressure starts to rise again.
It is possible but, more likely to be the condenser if it was leaking under the car.

Might be ok, but apparently not a good idea to leave them empty of gas. Allows in moisture which isn't good for the internals. If yours is empty, definitely get a new receiver/dryer fitted too - not too expensive. Got a garage to recommission my ac after being unused for 13 years. Had garage give it a vacuum for several hours to boil off any moisture that got in. Just as well because they found a big hole in a rubber hose that had chafed on an engine mount - typical Fiat! New hose from Fiat was over £300, but got the old one repaired by a company in Benfleet.
Was worried that I left it too long to fix, but 5 weeks on, it's still ice cold. Just in time for cooler weather.

I leave ours on all the time, I don't think there's such a trade off regarding fuel consumption these days.

The fuel consumption on my 04 diesel Scudo does suffer a bit with the ac on.
