Hi,
Was digging in the back garden and unearthed this pipe (please see pics) black/grey in colour, only about 8" under the surface!! I found it in 2 places about 5 metres apart from each other, so don't think it's discarded. Anyone got any ideas what service it might be?
Cheers

it has the appearance of galvanised steel, perhaps a water pipe, but it looks strangely clean and uncorroded.

Can you measure the diameter?

If it is rigid steel, there will be connectors, probably screw-on, at intervals, maybe around two metres, perhaps double that (because the lengths have to be short enough to fit in a van or truck)

As it is tiresome to bend, it probably runs in straight lines from origin to place where it is used.

Sometimes it is used for conduit, so look for a shed, fountain or tap.

It runs about 1 meter away from the side of the house out in to the back garden... Our water meter is in the path at the front of the house and I've found our gas pipe previously, again going out in to the road at the front of the house... It's plastic, house was built in 1977. Could be electric as it's not that far from meter box, but scratching my head why its going in to back garden, when I would of thought all services would be out in the road at the front and why only 8" down.

It has the appearance of metal in the pic, but it's definitely rigid plastic, about 1" in diameter.

As it is not metal then it could be a duct for telephone cables.

If it is a telephone duct then it is either the cable bringing telephone service to your house or ( less likely ) it is taking a cable to a distribution pole or street cabinet. If it does take a cable to a DP or cabinet it would ( should ) have been installed with a wayleave granted by the builder or a previous owner of the house. If there is a wayleave then there should he a record of it with the deeds.

Grey plastic is used for BT cable ducts. But yours is strangely small (and maybe someone just used what they laid their hands on).
Is it hard and shiny, like waste pipe? Or flexible and you can mark it with your thumbnail?

Look like the flexible type and you can mark with a thumbnail.

Thinking about it... Daughters got a handheld meter detector, if its BT or electric then that would tell me, plus could use a drill cable detector to tell if its live... A bit worried as its so shallow... russian roulette putting a wash line up!!!

It could be that someone has used it to contain a cable for an outside electrical supply, perhaps a shed or water feature that has now gone. Possibly OK for 12v items supplied via a transformer, but not for 230V mains. I've seen that sort of thing a few times.
