Good question - all the installers I’ve spoken to all advise the unvented route is a fair bit more expensive - as I need to also buy the unvented cylinder and pay the labour to install on top of the cost and install for the boiler.
I don’t really want to pay much above 4K-4.5k and nobody can give me an unvented for that.

Options:
A. Install a proper system with an unvented cylinder, and enjoy hot water delivered at decent pressure at all outlets.
B. Spend less on a compromised combi system and put up with years of disappointing performance and complaints from the rest of your family.

You get exactly what you pay for.

If the existing mains pressure is up to it.

The best thing you can do is have the property looked at properly by a reputable installer who can advise appropriately.

Or, if outlay is the problem, maybe A2, get a new boiler now, and use a vented cylinder for the moment, but convert to unvented when you want to/can afford to improve your HW.

I will probably convert my own house to unvented if/when the cylinder needs replacing.

But I don’t think I need to store such a large volume of hot water in an unvented cylinder.....it’s fairly rare i need to run multiple showers/outlets are the same time as the family all get ready at different times, but I’d like to have some capabilities just in case at an affordable price.
I get the argument that a separate cylinder can be heated with an emersion in case of breakdown but I will be getting a 10year warranty so I don’t need to worry about that for the foreseeable.

modern cylinders are very well insulated, so the heat loss is likely to be lower than getting a combi hot, only to cool down again, every time you run a hot tap.

Mine doesn't even keep the airing cupboard warm in summer.

When your combi breaks down, you will have zero HW until the mender comes back with the correct part.

Yes but surely you pick a system to fit requirements....I understand an unvented cylinder might be the best overall option for supplying hot water, but I don’t need to supply 3-4 showers all at the same time. Mostly run 1 shower at a time, but don’t want the limitation on the odd occasion I want to run 2.
Storage combi’s seem to be a happy mix of hot water on demand and everything in one box but with the stored water benefits of a unvented system.

Good call Whall3y. Something like this with an inbuilt unvented cylinder for the odd occasion I need 2 showers and that should be perfect combo of performance vs price

All the boilers mentioned are a waste of time if you're not upgrading the main.

At 16LPM you're far better off sticking with a conventional system with a cistern in the loft

Why do you say that? The viessmann is rated at 18litres/min - only slightly higher than my main, and the 35kw Worcester 8000 rated at 16litres/min.
Why would I have to upgrade the main?

All this heartache just to have the facility for two people to use two showers simultaneously...Definetly a 1st world problem..A 28kw combi will heat your house and give a perfectly sensible shower.Many give you 10 years Warranty.

Amen! Thanks for the reality Durhamplumber.
I set out to replace my boiler so I can simply get hot radiators and hot water in the taps.
I want something better than a fiesta or mini metro, but don’t need a rolls-Royce - all get you to where you want to go.
I’m going for 1 of the 3 in original post as all have been recommended to me. I’m sure each will do the job well.
