Withdrawing from human rights convention is ‘wholly wrong’ says Justice Secretary when British Conservatives ‘wrote the damn thing’

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politic...-rights-convention-wholly-wrong-says-justice/

"You know, it was British Conservative lawyers who wrote the damn thing back in 1950. We wrote it because we were leaders of Europe when it came to freedom, we wanted to underline the importance of fundamental rights and freedoms back then and that frankly for me is hugely important."

Churchill was a vocal proponent of the the efforts to create the Council of Europe and the Convention on Human rights, and he was Prime Minister when it came into force.

They probably didn't realise at the time how susceptible the Convention would be to abuse by unscrupulous Lawyers and other chancers.
Having said that, i don't think the Convention should be abolished, rather it should be redefined to be compatible would with the realities of modern life

...politicians and far-right press spreading lies.

Did you know that our anti-foreigner ex-Prime Minister Theresa May actually told a made-up story to her followers at a Conservative rally, about human rights? In order to whip up hatred?

And ended by saying "you couldn't make it up"

Even though she did?

The OP argument is very weak argument. Stuff changes and as Vinty says, it can be manipulated beyond how the authors intended it to apply. I doubt they intended it to be leveraged by those hell bent on murder and terrorism.

So do you believe that all of us should lose our 'human rights' because of a few abuses of the system?

And what is often ignored is that it is the misinterpretation of the act, not the act itself...

But hey, the ignorant are prepared to throw away hard fought for rights just because of a few 'headline cases' which may or may not be true!

RWR believe the lies and dismiss the truth.

When I was a lad, the old could supplement their pension by being a watchman on the road side, he didn't do anything he was just paid to be there, and the University student could get a shop job when 95% of the time he sat there doing his studies, only when some one came into the shop did he put down his University work and serve some one.

But then to have human rights we got a minimum wage, all these being present jobs went, no longer do we have the night watchman, we have a guy driving around 30 sites casting an eye as he drives past, and if a car knocks over the warning lamps then next car ends up in the hole.

It has gone too far, so when some one calls me a gog I can report them to the police. But I am a Gogledd Cymru to give it full title, so why should it be considered against my human rights to call me a gog?

Is it?

My extensive research finds it means North Wales so a pretty silly thing to call a person.

However, the modern thinking, I believe, is that anything is offensive if you perceive it to be, so just don't. :)

Do you think that you will find "minimum wage" mentioned in the European Convention on Human Rights? It's pretty short and specifies some very unremarkable things.

Torture? Slavery? Free trial? Religion? Which of these freedoms do Boris and Theresa want to remove?

RWRs are not keen on "Effective Remedy" (which means that if you are, say, tortured, or imprisoned without trial, you can complain and get it stopped).

nope - it needs to evolve.

Torture
Slavery
Homo phobia

Hmmm pretty much sums up. Most Islamic States

A Human rights act is a good idea but it needs to be fit for purpose.
If the government is withdrawing from the European HRC, what will they replace it with.
Will they create a British Human rights act which will not only protect the rights of refugees but also the rights of the host population.
