In my photo you can see i will have a half slate on the edge of my roof.

I am using spanish 500 x 250 size slates. So this cut will be 125 in width.

Instead can i use a slate and a half size to give a stronger edge ? I can see you can buy a 500 x 375 slate size so am guessing this is likley.

Can anyone tell me if this is a bad idea or cant be done.

If so, do you know how many slates i will need. I need approx 30 battons. Maybe 15 should be enough.

Trevor, good evening.

Short answer is Yes go for them !

Half size / short width slates are shredded in a good going gale.

Also good for skew valleys where the width available varies violently and very quickly.

As fo the number? get a few spare could be useful and indeed used elsewhere.

Ken.

The Spanish will be a different colour and general thickness and look.
To use halves is not wrong and last many years until the fixings fail as in this case
likewise slate and a half ok too.

You have a decent Welsh slate as you know. You could check the réclamation sites to see if they have some 24 x 14 or bigger then cut them to size .
I can see you have some slates that have been trimmed to help increase the half size.

Spanish slates are going to look quite different to that welsh slate. And yes, you can use slate and a half. I'm a fairly novice slater and have just slated a new garage https://community.screwfix.com/threads/garage-work-in-progress.222282/ I found the spanish (I presume SIGA?) slates had a few that were twisted but were otherwise good. Thinner than the welsh slates in your picture.

Q. Why did you choose to use spanish, instead of reclaiming what you can from your roof and topping up with new similar? This is what was done (not by me) on my house and I reckon they reclaimed about 70-80%.

You'll also see that as a novice slater, I used slate hooks - suggested to me as they are a bit easier to use to avoid slates not sitting flush caused by too-tight nailing. They also secure the lower edge of the slate and are, I believe a very secure fixing for exposed areas.

I found the spanish slates cut easily with freund shears (which also have the hole punch). Not sure I could cut/punch thicker welsh slates like that though!

Just easier to take off and put new up. I can sell what I don’t use hopefully.

finding the extra slate is an issue as well.

Only a fool would do that.

I have spoken to them and they will give me a cert so when I sell this will be useful for the house.

I am used to BC so I can’t see many issues with them. £70 for it.

They just want to check I get the insulation increased and I am doing this but can’t up rate it as much as they want. I’ve explained the depth of the rafter limits me to 50mm and they have ok’ed it
