Lead pipe supply

I've had someone take a look.

Rather than mole a 10m length, then a right angle and pull up an oak wooden floor (about 20m total) to reach the existing stop cock, he suggested ir would be far cheaper to mole 4 meters to the front corner of the house and run hdpe internally.

I would first purchase 25mm hdpe and route it via the subfloor in the pantry (where there's an exposed 15mm copper water pipe, and he'd fit a new stop cock) straight along the hallway to the front of the house, into the dining room. All laying on the subflooring / under floorboards.

He'd want the boards lifted in the front corner of the house and the coiled pipe waiting to be pulled through.

He'd then drill though, pull the pipe through and connect it to the meter in the street.

He reckons that would be far, far, cheaper, and, as I can buy the pipe, route it etc, so he only needs to dig 2 pits, do a short mole run and connect it all up.

Does this sound kosher?

I'm happy to do the work...

Is it worth moling 4mtrs? What’s the surface?
An incline, brick path, 9ft high laurel hedge, to the meter, uphill, maybe 1m incline. Meter is buried about 1m down in an access pipe.
Fairly convoluted. They will have to lift pavment and dig the first mole pit there.

Oh, there's also a wild bee hive in the hedge.

By the sounds of it I’d dig the lot, but saying that, when we mole we hire the compressor whereas this guy might have one on his van.

They are a "specialist" moling/water main replacement company. They reckon its a simple job.

I had a nice surprise - water company called, doing lead test monday. They also said if my pipe is lead, so is theirs between the meter and their main, so will book in a team to replace it.

When I confirm my work is done, they'll give me a £250 credit on my bill.

Moling quote for my main, for them to do all the work, is £650 ish

So total cost to me is £400.

Excellent. Which water company is this?

Don’t know what your pressure/flow is like but while the work is being done is 25mm enough for future use, if the supply to the property is larger

Lead or micro plastic in your water...Take your pick...Half of the country is still lead....Probably furred over donkies years ago so no lead in the water.

Epic in the lead pipe. Previous owners had the tap isolators set on a stready flow. It set them fully open and turning the cold tap sprays everywhere. A strong flow, even if going through 20m of lead pipe.

Yeah, I grew up on lead pipes. Didnt harm me, that I know. However, its a real although small risk to kids and pregancies. I have both.
It's worth it for peace of mind. I choose plastic.

Few metres to your house makes no difference when the water has sat in miles of lead
No, the water company have said the supply from their main to my meter is also lead, and they are coming Tue to dig up street and replace it.

Hi I just meant if the supply from the water board from the street was larger then 25mm I would go with 32mm for the future, a larger family using multiple appliances at once in the future

And the other endless miles of pipe from wherever the water is stored?
