Hi,

We have an Edwardian orangery (walled both sides) and a double-glazed roof (4.5m x 3m).

We have been looking at a roof replacement as a DIY job but we are way out of our depth!

Can anyone suggest the cost we would be looking at for the following instead?

Supalite roof installation (with composite tiles)
1 x Velux window
Plastered ceiling
A few downlights (spots)

I understand there are lots of other factors re: materials but a ballpark would help a lot! Thanks.

Try an Ultraroof and you would be able to install that yourself to save some money.

Is it realistic for a DIY job? So far I've only floored a loft & done some decking, laminate flooring e.t.c.

Also we currently have a pelmet with spots (6 inch deep, 5 inch high), would we need to remove the pelmet as part of the installation (I was hoping we could keep it and plaster up to the ceiling ...)

An Ultraroof is probably doable as a DIY jobif you followed all the documentation they supply with a roof and you have half decent tools, someone to help with the heavy lifting, however the Ultraroof comes with a pelmet that is part of the ringbeam, this is where we usually install the LEDs and Speakers if requested.
I would need to see your conservatory construction to tell you if the pelmet could stay, im going to assume its screwed to the frames. It is going to make whatever roof you choose to install a lot harder with a pelmet in the way.

There aren't the best images but when looking inside the pelmet, it does seem that it is screwed to the frame / exterior wall ...

The side wall pelmets are 9 inches underside and 16 inches topside (where it meets the upvc). The pelmet above the doors is 11 inches topside and underside.

We also have 2 tall posts at the corners of the room where the side walls meet the doors ...

So if I was to proceed, it would be a case of taking out the pelmets but leaving the posts in place?

If you pull off the white cladding on the roof ringbeam you will see if you will be able to take the roof off and leave the pelmets, looks like you could from what I can see.

Looks like the ring beam sits over the pelmets, you should be good Prop the pelmets before removing the roof. If you chose a prefabricated tiled roof, make sure that you prop the ridge up so its level and leave it propped up right until the very end, it should be the last thing you take out before plaster boarding.

Ah fair play, well the offer stands. You are going to save a fair few quid doing it yourself, but save yourself a fair bit of headache having someone else do it for you.
