When I bought my house, the wire in the images was in one of the walls. What does it do? Is it safe to cut it with pliers and cover the hole in the wall with filler? It's in the way just hanging there. Thanks

It is safe to cut in that there is only a small voltage on it if the other end is still connected. Problem is that if the other end is connected and you cut that wire it could produce a short that could prevent your phone and your broadband from working. You do need to find the other end and disconnect it.
I'm not sure what it would be connected to. There was a phone socket in one of the upstairs bedrooms, which has been removed. Does it link to that? As an alternative to cutting it in case that would produce a short, could I just feed the whole thing into the hole and then cover with filler?
The main phone/internet socket for the house is on the opposite end of the windowsill in the same room as the wire I'm planning to cut. I will take some more pictures....

It likely took the phone connection to another room of the 6 connections 2 and 5 will have 50 volt DC if connected, clearly does not matter from which end you count so if dead then clearly other end not connected so you can cut the cable.

If you cannot prove the cable is dead ( no voltages ) then if you do cut it make sure that the individual wires cannot make contact with each other after it has been cut.
That’s the male end. Safe to cut as it won’t be plugged into anything. If it was the female end it would be a different matter. Just think of it as an extension lead - it would be safe to cut the plug off of it but if it was the other end, you might not know if it was plugged in or not.

True, but that’s a telephone wire, not an RJ45 connector. My answer would have been different if it was.
Didn't spot it was a telephone plug. That said nothing is impossible when DIY telephone wiring is involved. But yes I agree, very unlikely to have anything hazardous at the other end,
