Hi I am planning on building an L shaped desk for the office. I purchased 4 scaffold boards and was just wondering what would be the best way to sand them down ready to varnish? I have attached a picture of 2 of the boards along with an image of what I plan the desk to look like and the stain I have purchased. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

When I see scaffold boards like that I consider skipping them.
Those look like they have been dragged from the back of a ditch.
The black patchy marks means they are going rotten.
The wood fibers then become weak.

Thanks. They were from a scaffold merchants and where outside.

Sanding is not enough unless you have a industrial sander. Need plane first , used scaffold boards on a few doors .

If they are wet you need to let them dry for a few weeks to see if they warp or twist , even after selecting the straightest boards I had to discard a few due to twists or warping.

Belt sander - a nice big 4in wide industrial jobbie starting with a 40 grit belt....

Before you start any sanding... Get those boards in your car and down to your local garage that as a power washer...get them powerwashed to get rid of the grime and grit qand also "raise the grain" dry em out and then sand for a really good finish!!
