Hi all

I am about to start researching home security cameras and wondered if anyone had any recommendations on what type to get and what to look out for in terms of features?

I was hoping to install the set up myself but have no issues with enlisting the help of a professional if needed.

I'm really turned off at the thought of paying a monthly subscription for cloud services etc.

Im looking into a ring tyoe camera for my Mum what stopped me is Amazon are buying up the storage and apps to many of them.

Ring is an Amazon product/ company and Amazon have there fingers in so many pies, not bad considering they started as a book seller from a garage.

As for cameras, you need to think of the job you want them to do and your budget.

If the area you have is pitch black at night then look for a 24/7 colour option like Color Vu or TiOC there are others.

The only issue I have with these are resolution limits, but a standard terrace house going on to the street and a small back yard would find 2MP/4MP ample even on a wide lens, however larger homes and gardens may require more than 1 camera a side to get the right coverage and pixel density.

I bought a Hikvision kit from this firm. https://www.cctvkits.co.uk
klit been very good, quality excellent. I bought a kit from Yale kit from Costco first and it was terrible so I sent it back fro a refund and spent a bit more money. It was worth it.

In general if you can buy from the likes of Costco, B&Q, Screwfix etc etc then the chances are they aren't up to much, and swann/ yale are whats on offer.

The biggest mistake people make is buying the wrong cameras for the job in hand and their budget often being unrealistic.
