Had an engineer out today and boiler had L2 lockout. He did exactly what i thought, changed the gas valve, changed Flame sensor, checked the ignition and spark. Then gave up and suggested tryng a new heat exchanger and pcb board
Basically a right off due to cost then.

Before this is done any other engineer have any thoughts on this, i suspect its def not heat exchanger, but wouldnt be suprised if the pcb had something to do with it. The engineer called a few others and said its all calling and firing just not staying alight and the blue ignition ligth isnt even lighting. They had told him to do what he already done and didnt come up with any other idea.

Also any idea if a typical install cost to swop a combi for a combi as Ideal will supply a discounted one but said it would need to be fitted correctly by an engineer (gas safe) which is obvious. May have to supply a new through the roof flu also which no idea on costs.

Any thoughts welcolme

check that the condense pipe is not blocked that gives L2 that is the more likely fault .
If its teed into existing waste i would start there

It was a fixed price repair and from an Ideal engineer, one that also unfortunately wasnt fixed. It isnt a blocked condense system, it isnt a spark system all those fine. The engineer to my suprise never tested anything except gas levels but did confirm the other stuff all ok. He was stumped to be honest. This is why he said the next stage would be to try the heat exchanger and the pcb, which led Ideal to state it is beyond economical repair. I suspect deep down its something very small as it was working ok but something made it go into L2 mode, all the usual suspects have been ruled out.

I would be getting on the phone to Ideal and demanding a more experienced engineer, stating he was just changing things for the sake of it and why should you pay for parts that the boiler didnt need, doubt very mutch if it is the heat exchanger but as it is lighting but not rectifying it could be the pcb, you say he already changed the spark and sense electrodes

that was the good part, as it was ideal fix deal, he never fixed so do not have to pay for the parts, it isnt actually lighting, trying but not doing it, the blue indicator does not even start except when first powered on. It is definately firing the ignition though and a new flame sensor and valve. I just feel its not right to bin something based on what i witnessed, i did expect some kind of testing rather than what seemed a rush job to change the regular culprits. However left without a working boiler at the property, its not actually mine.

gas in was the only check he did using a device, and that was ok apparantly. I have messaged another engineer found online who appears to be far superior, lets hope i get hold of him soon.

If it hasnt been properly serviced over the years it could be the heat exchanger needs cleaning, not a major job but common for the poke and go brigade to over look it

well hope to get hold of the engineer i found online Monday to arrange to come so feed any info that may be useful to them or whoever comes out to hopefully resolve

Blocked hex or faulty spark generator. I wouldn’t rule out the spark gen unless it’s new.

If the gas valve is opening and the spark is correct as @gas112 says condensate can stop it, but pull the pipe off the trap and that can be ruled out.

After that as @ianmcd says blocked hex. But in all honesty I can’t see ideal walking away on a FPR ? Doesn’t sound right to me.

Unless there’s some white showing on the flue :LOL::LOL:
