Padstone Help

Hi
I have put in a padstone (140mm) at one end of a catnic but at the other end it exceeds 140mm in height and need to get it level. The height i need to make up is more than a brick in height. Whats the best method to get these level?

Also, while i am at it, should the catnic be tied in? If so, how

Actually its less than a brick, what i was thinking was cut a heavy duty block to the right size, bed in mortar and then put mortar on that to lay the padstone at the right height.

You can lay the padstone on anything as long as its no worse a material than the rest of the wall. So it does not need to be a heavy duty block unless the rest of the wall is too. But it can be just a thick bed of mortar. Clay tiles, slate, paving block or slab, or split brick are normally fine.

Catnic's, and beams should be built in at the bearings, not tied in with ties or whatever.

I've never got a satisfactory answer as to why building control want padstones with steel beams but not with timber or flitched or concrete beams or steel/concrete lintels when the loads are the same.
