Valiant Or Viessmann Boiler

Will the clueless and gullible on here understand that manufacturers pay installers to promote their brand and Which magazine ceased to be a valid authority decades ago.
The recommendation of an installer or Which is worthless. I never said to trust Which, what i said was they are heavily influential in the market place, going for a boiler recommended by the installer if they have found a decent installer is not a bad idea, as i have said in previous threads, all boiler manufactures offer very lengthy warranties, and the chances of a boiler going faulty is remote, if this wasn't the case they wouldn't offer the long warranty they would be losing money hand over fist. The majority of time having the boiler installed by an accredited installer increases the warranty offered. When things do go wrong the boiler manufacture is easier to deal with if its installed by an accredited installer and most of the time the installer gets on well with the area rep which increases the chances of faults being fixed quickly. Also by going with the boiler the installer suggests chances are they have fitted a few of them and know how to set them up etc without having to get on the phone to a technical helpline or spend time trying to read the manual, going fot the installer recommendation is as much good for the customer as the installer.

Imagine a customer insisting you fitted a Ferroli and then called you up because its gone faulty....

On the other hand some of us just repair boilers and are therefore not so biased towards particular makes/models.
By all means go for these obscure brands..Viessmann, Intergas etc but from my experience you can be waiting a week for parts and few will want to work on them.
What happens when your installer is on holiday and you obscure boiler packs up?
If Intergas UK actually cared about customers they would sort out their product support, get more spares into merchants etc but until they do I wouldn't touch them.
I have one customer that waited over a week whilst a pump was shipped from the Netherlands the UK importer being so hopeless....that's no fun at Christmas.

Installer sugested baxi 624 :) Trying to do research before going blindly with him

thats a good option, plenty of people like them, installers and repairers are everywhere, spares are easy, the boiler is good.

only downside is the opentherm only works with their own controller so cant use this option from your nest, but apart from that its all good.

Gasguru couldnt have said it better - I cannot go with some hardcore diy reccomendation if normal people dont know how to service or support them

Many professions have been forced to clean up their act with disclosure of kickbacks/commissions etc...the heating industry is yet to do so.
Some manufacturers might give the installer a "free" boiler with every 10 installed, or a simple cash bung of £100 for every install etc.
That's just the way the industry works in this country...installers double up as the sales force for the manufacturer.
This becomes an issue when you as the customer assume you're getting fair advice from the installer but are perhaps not being made aware of
important issues like poor manufacturer support or reliability because the installer just wants the sale.
It's also fair to say that due to these incentives several especially hopeless manufacturers that produced woeful boilers have survived rather than going bankcrupt.

Thanks gasgutu very grateful

a final question which boiler would you pick for a small two bed flat ? I did see baxi offering the £100 bung. I wish they wouldn’t do that

Baxi/Potterton/Main are the same boiler group and these models are essentially identical inside but with different front panels and warranty lenghts.
They are dead simple to work on, easy parts availability and sensible parts prices when I last looked.

Main Eco Compact 25 or 30kW (5 year warranty AFAIR)
Baxi 624 or 630 or 636 (7 year warranty AFAIR)
Baxi 825 or 830 or 836 (10 year warranty AFAIR)

You'll find you just pay extra over the basic boiler price for the longer warranty but without a quality install and proper yearly servicing warranties are often voided.

A 24 or 25kW boiler is sufficient for a shower or occasional bath and with much of Londons hopeless water pressure it's futile installing anything much bigger unless the water pressure/flowrates are measured.

That bung comes out of the higher kW/longer warranty models...
Don't be swayed into looking at other models within the range...most boiler manufacturers have good and absolute dogs of boiler designs.

Of the options you have said the Baxi is truly the best all round option. Whether they do the kickback or not.

Also don't be put off by the kick back there is many industries that use this as an effective tool to keep customers.

In the world of online trading the profit margins have become increasingly tighter, and customers can find the boilers at often cheaper prices than installers get at their local merchants, so the £100 cashback is more of an incentive to appease the installer as a lot started to get upset they couldn't make profit on boilers.

The 600 series boiler is actually a very good boiler and has brought many installers back to Baxi after a number of years of poorly designed boilers.

As a side note if going for the Baxi have you thought about their smart thermostat? It's similar to the nest in the way it works and is opentherm which is better for efficiency and makes the house a more comfortable environment so you don't get temperature overshoots.

Admittedly though it doesn't look as nice as a nest, but the opentherm side of the nest doesn't work with the Baxi opentherm. (Though tbh nest opentherm doesn't work with any of the boilers you've mentioned)

yes i know Which doesnt hold up much when it comes to boiler testing, but my point is that they do influence the boiler market quite heavily and veissmans have been fitted 10 fold since they became Which recommended, which was only about 3 years ago if i remember right.

Yes, about the time they started advertising in the other WHICH magazines, money, travel etc.

I know there are people in here that like Viessmann boilers, I would never fit one, if a customer was adamant that they wanted one then I would walk, I dont even repair them anymore, crazy prices for parts, I class them the same as Kestons

In the end I bought a mains eco compact boiler for £480 and flue for 70 which is pretty cheap

not installed it yet but I have the box in the house. Intergas rapid was also available for same price but I chose the main in the end

I’m so glad I did not go for something more expensive

cost to install is £600 which sounds high for a straight swap and powerflush. Can I do any diy to make this cheaper?

20K on a car and £500 on the boiler....you sound like my nightmare customer :)
Get a Beemer and you could spend more on the car service than the boiler...

Gasguru has a point - The OP seems happy to yearn for a BMW or a Volvo with all the toys and is prepared to spend twenty thousand pounds , but ...................
