My son wants to build a gaming computer

Only worth getting a K if you intend to overclock. Then you need a motherboard that supports overclocking.

Who knows what a youngster will want after a while ? I can guess !!
An i9-9900k has the same turbo 5.0 GHz as the i9-9900 out of the box - but the k is 16% faster - stock. 3.6 GHz versus 3.1 GHz
Academic I guess, the op is going AMD?
Worth getting a decent motherboard - I have an Asrock Z77 Pro4 - from 2014 ! + i7-3770k - No problems down the years (was real fast back in the day - doesn't feel slow today).

I’ve decided to get him an x570 motherboard, a Ryzen processor and a power supply. He can earn the rest or buy it with any money he gets for Christmas.

Which is better between these 2 processors?

I’m thinking the 5 because it’s a 3rd generation.

The 7 has 2 more cores, all depends on how fast it can access the memory I suppose.

It "should" be able to process 33% more code for a given time frame.

As said above though maybe best to ask your lad!.

fwiw I have the 5/3600 and it works well - not had any problems yet.
Everything I play runs on high settings :)

I'd go for the 5. It's very unusual to find applications that can use that many cores well, it's more common to have things that are limited by a single thread. The 5 is nearly as fast in all metrics but has a far smaller TDP. That means it'll be generating less heat and with the same cooler should be able to be cooled, keeping you in the boosted range for longer. Also it's a more recent generation and that typically means more processing power per GHz (Instructions Per Clock, or IPC).

Then again the 7 has a cooler with integrated LEDs, so you could go either way.

I just noticed they don’t have either of them in stock

I’ll look for a similar priced 5 3600. Earlier in the thread someone said avoid the X, why was that?

That was me, IMO the X is not worth the high additional cost compared to how much better it is (its only a little better), you would IMO be better off spending your money on more RAM than the X version.

LED's can be added if required, does the case have a window? will the case be on display or under a desk? if not there is no point.
BTW, once he has his own PC, if it's in his room then you will never see him again except to get food/drink. :)

This year is a bad year for purchasing electronic goods.

With so many suddenly working from home, kids spending most of their time indoors and with still trying to play catch-up from shutdowns, it has caused issues, and there are also some unscrupulous groups out there purposely buying up stocks to cause a shortage so the value goes up and they can earn a profit.

AMD has been hit hard by this throughout the year.

I’ve now got the x570 motherboard, ryzen 5 chip, 32gb of ram, 700w power supply, a 500gb ssd memory card and the 1660 graphics card he already had.

I think I’m missing a HDD hard drive, the case and operating system.

Can anyone recommend a good HDD? Ebuyer seem really good with price and delivery but not sure exactly what I’m looking for. If I swapped his hard drive accross to the new machine would it then work with the operating system already insts
