Keylite must also be below rafter level because they have a strip that you pull and it expands to seal round the frame. I can't say about other makes as I have my standards you know old boy!What about the other makes?

I recall a unit we fitted a couple of years ago, and the brackets slotted into grooves on the sides of the frame and the frame was definitely above the rafters. Might have been Fakro, one's with the free jumbo pencil.
I think we're all talking at crossed purposes because of what I understand 'below the rafter' to mean. I can now see that what's meant (in my world) is 'it overlaps the rafter by an inch or two'.
Going back to my original question, this time with the aid of an excellent diagram... is the primary reason for the 40-60mm recommended gap to avoid this cold bridge where the rafter cheeks are exposed. If so then that's something I'm happy to live with for a little 55 x 78 velux:
Are you using the proper velux insulated collar?
If not, you can use expanding foam to fill the 'gap' then use celotex sheet at the side of the rafter (reveal) before you plasterboard.
I know it's a diagram, are your your rafters are really deep, and extend that much below the velux frame.

I didn't think I'd have room for the collar in this scenario, so would probably foam it in a as you suggest.
The rafters are 170, and I'll have 100mm of PIR on the other side of the reveal. I'm not sure how much they will extend below really. I'm happy to risk some condensation anyway, and the main reason for the original question was to check that there wasn't some other reason that velux say there should be a 40nm gap?

They're meant to be tiles but as they're on 10 week back order I have no idea what they actually look like.
