Roofing 'brand' names... worth the extra money?

Hey guys,

Just about to embark on my first roofing job on my extension, and I'm planning to re-roof my existing house too (120m2 in total)...so a baptism of fire!

I'm replacing 40 year old Marley Wessex tiles with the same as I have a roof with a 17.5 degree pitch.

However, I've noticed that a lot of the accessory products that Marley sell are sometime twice the price of others on the market. For example, dry ridge system 6m for Marley is £75, whereas there are other such as Easyridge are £35. Same goes for dry valleys, end caps, etc.

Am I getting any more for my money if I stick with Marley for everything (or will it be easer to fit given I'm a novice), or should I look to mix and match the brands to save some £££?

If you use the manufacturers stuff they will give you an additional warranty for the whole roof.

But most of the generic suppliers have been around for a long time and do produce quality products.

TBH, I see lots of plastic roof accessories which are exposed, fade after a short time in any case, and I wonder how long any of them will actually last.

Duplo is pretty colour fast, but bits tend to get lost so do not last too long

Thanks, not sure how much warranty I’d get as a DIY fitter.

I do wonder this too about the plastics, I guess the verges are cheap enough to replace if needed...think that’s the only coloured plastic on show for mine.

Actually I went to legoland in Denmark in 2019 and a lot of the models were quite faded. Was still amazing though

Ask one of the Marley or Redland reps if they will cover complete replacement done by a [competent?] DIYer. I think the criteria is that you just buy all their stuff.

As for fading, its not just the colour, but I wonder if the plastic is breaking down and becoming brittle. So all those ridges and tiles held down with just a few 10mm tabs of brittle plastic, probably wont be staying held down for long.

Thanks for this. I’d not even realised there was the potential of a warranty so it’s definitely worth asking the question.

I get what you mean about the ridge fixings too. I live 100m from the coast so it’s pretty breezy here...perhaps I’ll opt for the ridge with the fixings straight through into the ridge batten then.
