I had to do that to a selfish ba$tard of a neighbour who strung himself up from the stairs about 8 years ago!
We had had a falling out about 2 years previously and never spoke. One day his wife come hammering at the door screaming for me to help. Rushed into their house to find him hanging from the bannisters at the end of a very thick dog lead. I supported his body while his wife had to cut the lead with a bread knife. Got him on the floor, did CPR and kiss of life using a tea towel for protection but it was no use. When paramedics arrived I told them I think I've broken a couple of ribs, his response was, "thats the least of his problems, don't worry." At the inquest it was concluded it had not been a cry for help or a threat because he had known exactly where to place the rope for immediate result. The police had found a couple of books on hangmen and downloads on his computer about hanging so all my efforts were pointless.

My neighbour across the hall was depressed. She didn't live there for long, but I could see she was unhappy. I did try to talk to her but very time I see her either she or I was on the way out. I regret not giving her a knock to come across for a coffee and a chat.
She was a pretty girl who's world fell apart. One Sunday morning back in 2001; her mum come banging on my door, screaming to me to get her down. I run into her flat she was hanging from the airing cupboard.
She was not selfish, she just couldn't lift her life, she had no contact with her children and could not go on any more.

I couldn't sleep alone for the next 2 weeks, It did affect me.

The only thing that never got answers was that, she was in her dressing down. Yet the Sunday paper was on the side.

when we were kids our neighbour hung himself. He was found hanging through the loft hatch by his girls when they got home from school.

Someone I was friends with at school killed himself, just as his younger brother had and their dad had done when they were both young.

A friend that used to work for me when I lived in London killed himself because his marriage failed and he lost his job. I can think of any number of reasons for someone taking their own life but I don't think any of them did it because they were being selfish.

How awful do your problems have to be to come to the conclusion that the only possible solution is to take your life?

What a dreadful situation to be in.

Maybe selfish wasn't the right word, but this guy had everything to live for. He had his own business, 2 young sons to be proud of and, as far as anyone was concerned, a good marriage. His wife confirmed afterwards there were no problems in their marriage and his business was in good standing so there seems to have been no reason to do it.
Like some others I have also learned of school friends and work mates who have taken similar paths.

but this guy had everything to live for.
Sadly, you never know what other people are going through.

I was reminded by what you said of something I’d read about ex footballer Gary Speed who committed suicide. His wife said; “Sometimes when I see homeless guys on the street I think, ‘What is it that keeps them going?’ They have nothing. Gary had everything.

This is why I keep saying we need to go easy on each other. None of us know each other and whats going on in our little worlds.

Good on Dumb for his thread today apologising for things he's said. Only good guys can do that.

Sometimes it’s not just about problems though. It’s how you feel as an individual, doesn’t matter if you have everything as was mentioned by someone, it’s a bad feeling, and something can trigger your mind. You can feel worthless, a failure, or something else. @Bodd said it best, be a bit nicer to people, vast majority of us don’t know who we are or what we’re going through.

Scarily my Grandfather was one of 12 Children, he was the only one of the 12 to die of natural causes.

Wow thats a story.

My Mum is the eldest of 10 she's only lost one younger sister but two of her sisters sons (My Cousins) have gone in their 30s. All natural.

:cry::cry:

Just curious Ed, where any of the others killed in battle during the wars or did they do it themselves/by other means?

Back to happier things. Passed my first day on the First Aid course with 100% :)
Discussed various subjects in theory and did practical in removing an obstruction when someone is choking, correct recovery position, bandaging an open wound, CPR and Defibrillator techniques.
Not sure what the next 2 days are going to cover, possibly things like poisoning, epileptic seizures, anaphylactic shock reactions and probably more. Enjoying the learning and looking forward to it.

Sad end to the day though when I heard my son in law had been in a crash with a police car on the M11 early this afternoon. He is in hospital at the moment being treated for minor injuries but has sore shoulders and neck. Latest news is he can't really remember what happened.
