Hi,

I am about to carpet a few rental properties, in the past I have used the likes of Carpet Right, they have proved convenient - you can walk in and walk out with carpet, but its time to change.

Your proper Builders Merchants (Selco Excluded), if your in the trade you know the sublte and not so subtle differences between the gear sold in DIY sheds as opposed to your proper Builders Merchants, they will not sell you inferior quality, and its not always more expensive.

I presume the same is for carpet supplies, could any carpet fitters suggest any names for companies in N London.

Thanks

Ask around for carpet fitters, they will know all the local wholesalers and often give you a better price on commercial carpet ( sold to hotels etc)but more limited choice .

Can anyone also advise what is the best weight of carpet, backing type, twist or loop for stairs and rooms in a rental property.

Thanks

I would go to a decent independent, get some advice and explain what you are doing, they will likely give you a decent discount for supply only and the proper advice regarding some thing that meets your needs and budget.

If you go to a wholesaler direct you'll likely get what's on offer to them that month rather than what you really need.

Thanks, thats what we have been looking for ...

We've been rebuffed by a few trade suppliers, we've been looking to build a relationshpi as we will have a few rental properties coming up ... but they don't feel we are trade enough, even though we've been fitting our own carpets in our properties for years.

Its not Buckingham Palace we are looking carpet.

We are speaking to a few online carpet and carpet tile suppliers, free samples and gpopod advice over the phone, they seem to recognise the brick wall I've come up against, seems the trade acts a bit protectionist if you ask me.

Going the online route seems to be the way ... and it gets delivered direct to site !

A few used so far, and have seemed more than happy to accept our business:

Sure there are more, anyone wish to chime in with other online suggestions - thats all good.

Personally I think you are overlooking a much better service and business relationship that you could build with an independent shop, after 25 years in the trade, I’d like to think I have a decent idea where I know you’ll get better service and advice.

Thanks for the comment, but are independant shop's not out there to supply home owners ... and trade buyers go to the same place the shops buy from, trade suppliers would have a Rep. you would get advice from, just as we do with lots of other suppliers, why is the supply of Carpet any different.

Are shops just as interested to supply the fitting as the carpet itself, we are looking more for the supply side.

Going to a high street shop and trying to park would be a right pain in our large van.

Took our first delivery from Online carpets yesterday, branded quality product, delivered to site, within 48 hours, and no one else could beat the price with the delivery included.

Independent shops are usually very experienced in commercial and rental supply as well as fitting and more often than not buy direct from manufacturers not through wholesalers.

I'm just trying to think of a local carpet shop that still exists around here, the one I was thinking about was recently knocked down and turned into flats.

and more often than not buy direct from manufacturers not through wholesalers.
What percentage of carpet is imported to the UK ?? surely that all goes through wholesalers ?

A large amount of carpet is U.K. produced, although Lano Mohawk who are the worlds largest Carpet Manufacturer ship most of their product direct from factory in Belgium direct to shops.

The 4 Wholsaler groups I deal with right now supply the majority of their product via manufacturers that I have direct accounts with anyway.

I get all my carpet trade price as my son in law is a fork lift driver for wholesaler , get good price but have to collect myself and arrange fitting.
