Cost of gas meter? (new supply)

Hi,

Anyone have any idea what it is likely to cost to have a licensed gas supplier fit a new gas meter to a house? I am having mains gas supplied to the house via SGN.
SGN will not install the meter themselves and say that a licensed gas supplier should be used. British Gas etc i'm assuming.

It's hard to find the cost of having a meter installed. Anyone got any insight?

Unfortunately I cannot get a quote unless I have my Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), which I wont get until SGN come and install gas mains to the house.

Main cost is having the service put it my sgn. The actual meter fit isn't that much. The meters are actually owned by the supplying company. Plenty of choices Bg, avro,

When we needed a new gas supply (2017) NPower didn't want to know - they were happy to have the new gas account but wouldn't arrange a meter. Eon however would arrange the meter, and arranged for a quote to be sent - £500 for 20metre install. All very straightforward. My builder installed a recessed box before they turned up. Eon were helpful throughout.

To clarify, I have a quote for the work to bring the mains gas to the house. What i am after is a rough estimate of the cost of installing the meter? Thanks

We know that, and @MrBenchmark has answered that question in his post above. You need to contact the supplier you want to use, who will then give you their individual price to do the job, as they will own and install your meter.

Just to provide further info to what we did. We ONLY approached the gas suppliers and said we "want a new gas account but don't have a supply". NPower said they didn't install new connections. Eon said "leave it with us" they arranged everything - sorted out a separate quote for the supply installation, which we paid separately and then came along, fitted the meter. Eon issued National Grid (who organised the actual installation work - sub contracted to Balfour Beatty) with our MPRN before the connection was made. There was no separate charge to have the meter installed - we just paid the single charge to bring gas from the road.

I believe SGN own the network you will be connected to and there may well be different rules for different networks. Contact any suitable energy provider to get your quote. The provider will then own the meter and send your bills.

Strange as I had my meter moved by SGN who did all the work including connecting the meter in the new location leaving my gas engineer to connect up to the outlet of the meter. However I did have my MPRN and worked in the industry for 20 years before retiring.

different situation, but I had a nightmare trying to get a smart meter installed by the small companies (octopus, first utilities)

So I switched over to British Gas (even though they weren't the cheapest but were competitive).. rang them up and asked for smart meters to be installed.. they booked me in and was all done and dusted in 2 weeks!

Things like this you're better off with the big boys

Having smart meters would be my nightmare

Scottish Power are happy to leave me alone - and estimate our useage very accurately.

I had the opposite effect, bills always get over estimated! Plus my missus doesn't ever venture into the cellar so I was responsible for submitting the meter readings - just one less thing to worry about. And apparently the new SMETS2 meters make the switching process much quicker cos they all know your meter readings instantly

Once I got a nice little payout from npower over ~£1200 because of over charging - that was > 2 years after I'd left them and moved house! Good job they owned up to it

We had smart meter from SSE a year ago. It is SMETS2. Switched to EDF and they can' t read it! I give them meter readings when needed but i can read them off the remote display , gas & electric. In fact smart meters are more difficult to read manually because you have to cycle through the display to get the reading.
