What paint would be suitable for a workbench top? My garage workbench has a chipboard top and when it started looking a bit dirty and rubbish I just picked up some slate grey emulsion paint, now I know its not the hardest wearing coating but its done alright. That was about 5-6 years ago and it needs another going over but the little bit that was left in the tin had gone solid, so before I buy some more, is there something better I could use thats slightly harder wearing and perhaps wipable if a drop of something gets spilt on it? Ideally available in slate grey if possible

A workbench top is the last thing I would think about painting given that by its very nature it's going to take a battering
However oil based gloss is much more hard wearing than emulsion and of course you can get it in grey

Painting a work bench is fine if you're not going to use it ha ha.

Painting a workbench top I can't see a good (or any) reason for. Paint will mark clean wood, burn if you have heat work on the workbench and won't be good if you are working on electrical stuff.
If your workbench work surface is looking past it's best I'd cover it with a cut to size sheet of 6mm MR MDF. Just screw it down with countersink screws in each corner. Replace when abused beyond further useful life.

That's what mine is for - easy to wipe clean afterwards as well

I have plastic floor tiles laid down - i use 8 of these fitted together on the worktop for messy jobs or where i might otherwise damage the rubber
