Just removed the slab that used to be a fireplace in the upstairs bedroom so I can make it level ready for carpet.

I've lifted the slab and this concrete / cement mix was underneath. What will the concrete be on top of?

Should I just refill with concrete to make it level with floorboards? Bear in mind underlay and carpet going on top.

What's the best way to sort it out?

I've seen these cast in situ straight onto rough planking fixed atop the (reduced depth) trimmers quite a number of times.

Given the footprint, that was originally a two flue chimney breast - so in all probability there was, or still is, a GF chimney breast below.

Or, JobAndKnock has nailed it, as usual.

i just cracked on and filled it with sand and cement 4:1 mix. If there was a slab there before i thought it's not much different, although it's now level.

Bad choice but your call.
And what is below, directly under in the room below?

why is it a bad choice?
There was a slab before - i won't ever need to lift the carpet up to get to that area again, so as far as i am concerned i think it's job done?

whats in the room below this hearth?

its a chimney breast straight through from bottom floor up to chimney. the photo above is where fireplace used to be in bedroom (the room above livingroom)

.... but obviously that section is in front o chimney breast. I assume its supported by joists underneath??
