New loft hatch

Our existing loft hatch is above the stairs and high landing, I have to get the big ladders everytime I need to go into the loft. Quite dangerous, so I am looking to add a new bigger loft in the master bedroom. The joists are spaced approx 500mm apart, the new loft hatch will be 700 x 1100.

The problem I have is I'm not sure how best to do this as right where I need to run a noggin at the top for the frame is a few bricks that support the cross beam for the roof. See the poor diagram below: The green section is where the hatch will go best in order to give me the best height coming into the loft.

Similar way to existing hatch but double up on all the timbers .

Think the red block is bricks that are preventing that.

Can you not move it up to clear them, or at least get one joist full width with another below it?

I was thinking something like this will be strong enough? yeah the red brick is in the way of me running a full lengh noggin at the top. Trying to move it 300mm up from the brick makes a big difference as it reduces the head height by quite a bit when entering the loft.

I have decided to install it the other end rather than make it more complicated than it needs to be. I am looking to buy and install this ladder https://www.laddersandscaffoldtowers.co.uk/acatalog/1100mm-Wooden-Loft Ladder-Instructions.pdf but I'm not sure what the instruction at the bottom with the max 31,5cm - >31,5cm is asking me to do?

Think it means that from the top step to the loft floor level it must be no more than 31.5 cm

If it is greater than 31.5cm you would need to remove some of the joist to allow the mechanism to retract correctly


Think it will only be an issue if you floor joists are deep.

I presume these https://www.screwfix.com/p/quicksil...crews-10-x-4-100-pack/14275?_requestid=234587 will be fine for the trimmers/noggins? Is 2 screws enough in each end?
