Smart Meter ...

Yes. I requested both (gas and leccy) to be fitted. All done and have been in months. Zero fuss. No dramas. Much better than faffing around reading meters etc. Backwards luddites will say differently.

I like my current system of reading meters - makes it harder for the supplier to unexpectedly increase your monthly DD.
Had a smart meter in my previous house and seemed totally pointless really. Besides, another SIM card communicating via phone networks 24/7 just uses more energy, which is wasteful.

The only way smart meters help save money is by reminding you that you are using electricity. But you don't need a smart meter for that really. When I had one, I went around the house turning things off until the warning light went from red to amber to green. The last thing that was switched off was the smart meter.

I had a smart meter installed because it was a pain sending readings. I have not changed the way I use electricity as a result of having a smart meter. I don't even know where the monitor thingy is.

Why? It's still an electric meter when you have said and done all. One that requires zero fuss.

Confused - how is it pointless?

I don't like the ability of the meters to cut off the supply.

The last thing a household (think pensioners on a very tight budget) needs is to be struggling to pay a bill and be cut off.

There may be reasons for not having one, but that isn’t included.

They do not communicate 24/7. Their data is stored then batch transmitted once per day. When I requested 30 minute consumption logging, when my SM's were fully functional - my data only became available next day. The options were 30 minute, weekly, or monthly data. I would expect that data reception also lags by at least to 24 hours.

The supplier pays for the sim card and meter energy.

It might identify when I swap the gas meter every 2 weeks.

I was doing a boiler change 2 weeks ago in a house with concrete walls & ceilings. (Designed by a Hungarian called Goldfinger who’s neighbour happened to be Ian Fleming!!! True)
Anyway, he was on his 4th smart meter coz they really struggle with dence solid walls. They can’t send the signal to the grid. (They don’t use the household WiFi)

I wont have one because I dont read my meters and they have to send somebody (paid) to coma and read it....same as my water meter... I also wont use the scanners in the supermarket and would rather wait at the till.... somebody paid to do it
