Toilet drains slowly

Lol, that's long enough. You local to Reading? Spencer Wood? How much would that Jetta service cost?

Is there another chamber you are aware of outside the garage, downstream? Possible the issue could be outside of that chamber, (drains are funny things and dont always behave as expected!) May be worth investigating, (personally would prefer to try from externally before internally!)

Also may be handy to keep an eye out to see what comes through if the blockage cant be shifted anywhere else and has to be attacked from the WC position.

Yes, no problem. My jetter has a 100m hose.

Ooooooo that’s a big’un

If I came to your house and the toilet was out i’d try with my camera first. If you have a soft(ish) blockage I would hope to pass the camera through it then work it free with some water.

I did one on Friday where DynoRod had tried to use a powered version of what Andy linked to and they got it stuck

Hi Guys

Firstly thanks for the response and guidance.

Apologies for the lack of response. My router decided to stop working. Ahh crap. I just read your thread ref Dyno Rod. They are coming tomorrow morning to give a quote. My aim was to ask them if they needed the drain cover accessible or if they could go down the toilet (with it removed) or through the external drain hoppers. Doh

I've also spoken to the previous owner today and the manhole in the kitchen is just tiled over. The inspection hatch exists directly below and in his opinion It should easily be recoverable as he was mindful the floor may have to come up if a difficult problem manifested. Ive just ordered a grout removing bit for my oscillator so looks like I'll get that manhole accessible again.

I'm at the end of the run in a cul de sac. I'm the last house on the drain. It flows into my neighbors property through our garages. They also extended and the manhole is accessible but also in their kitchen. The elderly couple are shielding so I have zero chance of getting access. Its all elderly shielding people this end of my road. They all moved in sometime in the 80's and flogged the drainage and now moving our for the younger ones to repair. Lol.

(Ian H) are you local to Reading?

They're not called Dyno Rob without reason, be wary of the upselling. As Ian has said, please come back and check if you're not sure of anything they've said or recommend.

One of the Franchisees was advertising for an engineer yesterday, London Area, starting salary of £24K, (rest is commission based I understand.) Needless to say it got laughed off the page...

Hi all

An update. Dyno Plumbing turned up to replace the toilet, which is strange because I was pretty clear with the blocked drainage part of my written explanation to them. So Dyno Rod didn't turn up. I then decided to make good use of my time and started to uncover the hidden manhole in the kitchen.

It took bloody ages carefully uncovering it from tile cement, then to release the securing screws and crack the cover ready to be lifted out. New manhole arriving tomorrow so I'll get it level with the tiled floor and have it accessible.

I then had a knock at the door at 16:00 today and nice plumber was clearing a sewer, three doors down, and asked me to run the water to see if its a shared sewer. I then went to the problematic toilet flushed and it drained perfectly. Lol. Apparently the sewer in the neighbor's property was fully blocked and backed up. That will be the multiple 20litre bucket of water I've been shoving down the system. They had roots in the sewer which was snagging paper. They are reporting to Thames Water as its a shared sewer.

Thanks for all the advice. This is a great site made by all of you who contribute great ideas and challenge.

I thought id share a pic of the uncovered manhole. no point showing it when its lifted because it will be a standard clean sewer which I'm sure you've all see many times

I'm trying to keep in mind that I would have done this job eventually and to ignore the cost.

Always worth contacting the water company before you do anything else. Worse case scenario, they'll tell you it's private and either offer to unblock it for a fee, or pass it back to you to engage someone yourself. Afraid I have to wonder if the company who were due to attend would have been that honest.

As its a shared sewer, the Thames will have responsibility from the point it either becomes shared, or passes under the boundary. If you have root ingress, then may need a root cutter sending through the pipework, and possibly lining once clear to prevent a recurrence.

Glad to hear its sorted. (y)
