Smart Meter ...

What battery? I've never seen one in the old analogue meters? Or in my smart meter for that matter.

The gas meter uses a very long life battery, to operate the electronics and transmit the readings to the electric meter. I am not sure whether the electric meter has one or not, though I suspect it will have one, or at least a backup cell.

So if your meter goes down and you need a new one at night, they will fit and set up a smart meter ?
You asked this question in response to me saying that analogues (that need replacing) will be replaced by smart meters. Then you started waffling about batteries in smart meters. WTF?

Yes, about 10 years, and when you realise the first smart meters were installed in 2009, then some people may be inconvenienced.

The battery status /remaining life will likely be sent back to base, who will send an engineer out to replace the battery and before it fails.

Can you still take the smart meters off and fit them in reverse?

Asking for the whole estate near me.

I'm not using the 'smart meters are better' argument. I'm a fan because meter reading for me was a pain.

I got that. Not a pain for me, and seconds out of my day. I spend longer deciding what to have, after I've opened the fridge:mrgreen:

I'm also perplexed as to why having automatic transmission of meter readings can possibly be a problem or an incumbrance to anyone.

I haven't noticed that being an issue cited.
Issues cited have been related to usage monitoring by the supplier, supply metering, supply shut - off by remote means........

This rip down of a smart meter gives a lot of detail about the "hidden" features and possible function that a smart meter can offer,

Bigclive! Yes I've saw that long ago and as I suspected, in includes a small rechargeable lithium battery so it can run its electronics during a power outage, or when the cut out fuse is pulled and can still phone home.
