What are these things on the outside of our house?

Hi everyone

We have these things dotted all around the outside of our house. I've had numerous trades people visit our house and each time I ask them what these things are, no one seems to know. Some think they are purely decorative, others for ventilation but no one can be certain.

Can anyone here shine some light and help me understand what they are?

Thank you

Hi Mottie.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds reasonable. On either side of the thing there is clearly some hole.

Any other takers on what these could be or do we think wall cavity ventilation is the most likely?

it actually looks like a letter box
one thats so old the spring has rusted away then years later rendered over

Thanks big-all

As per my original post these are dotted all around the house. Literally all around it. Each one measures about 15cm across. Not a bad suggestion but extremely unlikely.

what material are they made from??
are they all identical[flap open amount ]??
are they all in the same brick course or fluctuating to external ground or inner floor levels ??
are they above or below the inner floor level ?

Hi big-all

what material are they made from??
[DT] I don't really know. Feels like stone. Upon closer inspection they almost seem like bricks inserted into the wall with the end of the brick that funny shaped bit at the end.

are they all identical[flap open amount ]??
[DT] Yes, all identical

are they all in the same brick course or fluctuating to external ground or inner floor levels ??
[DT] They are all on equal level. Sorry I'm not sure I fully understand this question.

are they above or below the inner floor level ?
[DT] They are all above the inner floor level, approx 1ft above ground level.

I've attached some more photos of the ones around the back of the house.

Put an endoscope in and see what's inside. If it leads to the wall cavity then for ventilation. If dead space then decoration or anchor for something external.

Thanks DiyNutJob

Would need to buy one to take a look. Although I'm not sure I'd even know what I'm looking at once I get something in there.

Still hoping someone knows what these are.

Google Holland or Dutch damp proofing system.

They are clay liners intended to stop damp. A discredited system.

Guys, you’re both legends. In my little world, anyway. The proverbial nail has been hit on the head.

Thank you so much for this.

Devlin, ignore these jokers above - they clearly do not know what they are.
They are clearly post boxes for Santa's mail... lolz :) :) :)
