I have some small brass nails. Over the years, they have lifted themselves, broken through paint resulting in failed paint and water damaged wood. I can imagine the lifting was caused by heat-cycling of the wood. This problem affected the horizontal surface more than the vertical surface. The horizontal surface received more sun and rain. Is there a solution to this problem?

What are they securing? What head type? Are they ribbed?

Nails may not be the correct fixing, or sink them lower.

you might like to tell us what they are nailed into, and what they are holding.

25mm x 1.5mm diameter smooth brass nail securing pine beading for window glass. The beading was pre-drilled for a snug fit for the nail. The nail was hammered into the window frame. The hammered-in part of the nail was complete backed out by the lifting.

Thanks for your comments. This may have been a non-issue. The paint may have failed first. The beading then may have repeatedly bloated and shrunk as it got wet and dried. The vertical beading were not affected because the water didn't linger there.
