Sadly, this is indeed the case, Jim - there are so many people out to make a swift buck without any consideration whatsoever to whom they accuse.
After 35 years in a huge comprehensive school I was sure to make many allies and some enemies amongst the pupils and therefore any memory jogging can't be a good idea - hence my desire to remain incognito.
Deputy Heads and above are recommended to remain union members, just in case.....for the other ranks it's up to them.
I can't comment on out of court settlements or the frequency of them, but for sure it's an open cash register for some.
John :)

It's definitely gotten worse

Last year - for the first time I think - insurance companies started strongly defending cases where tourists were claiming food poisoning ruined their holidays: they were a number who were fined thousands of pounds for blatant lies ( mainly because their FB posts completely contradicted their claims !! )
Are you aware of any instances where such action has been taken against former pupils ?

I can’t recall any instances where this occurred as most incidences were difused within school, after all the kids were classed as minors at the time.
There were a few staff exclusions where they were accused of violence but after the enquiry they were reinstated, and that was the same for the child too.....all we could really do was to ensure that child wasn’t ever taught by that teacher again.
Many bogus claims for this and that occurred, of course but cctv systems often came into their own.
One kid claimed to be hurt when climbing through a hedge which had a steel fence inside.....the parents said there were no signs around to say that he shouldn’t do such a deed, and were wanting cash.....I counteracted that by giving them the invoice for the hedge and fence repair. That was mutually forgotten!
It was always best to keep yourself on your toes, but after a while it became second nature to be able to out think the individuals concerned. You also quickly realised that some kids would never, ever tell the truth.

Nicely done!

My school was (is) one of the biggest comprehensives in the north east, with 2300 pupils and 13 form entry at the beginning.
Naturally enough there were many hard cases, usually from criminal families and trouble and agro was guaranteed but on the other hand there were many wonderful young people and you would be proud if they were yours! Curiously my career concentrated on the former because I could handle them better than others.....the first thing you did was check the register names to see who was heading your way.
Sadly there’s lots of them within Her Majesty’s Pleasure for every conceivable crime including murder but I come across some in garages, driving for Tescos and in shops from time to time.
I don’t return for anniversaries or anything, thinking once your done, it’s best to remain that way.
John :)

You always tend to remember teachers from your school days

Unfortunately, the bigger the school the more funds that it can attract, which in many ways is absolutely necessary.
Then along came Academy status, of course!
The volume of staff incorporated without an educational background is astonishing these days - fair enough on an administrative role but not a pastoral / teaching one.
John :)
