Howdy,

I did my bathroom recently as a test and did it just fine and it’s been fine for 6 months.

I am now going to do my downstairs in engineered wood. It’s a suspended wood floor so I am planning on overboarding in 11mm ply. Is this a good idea? I’ve seen flooring on floorboards directly and it looks awful.

I’m also assuming with the board and the engineered wood, there is no need to insulate as these two give same effect as carpet?

these are much larger spaces than my bathroom. Idea is to just get everything as level as possible with the ply boards. Really don’t want to hire someone as we are on a budget and it will double the price. I assume this is a job a competent DIYer can take on.

any tips, help appreciated. Obviously going to take off and replace skirting boards, cut under doorways etc.

Another issue is there are a couple of slopes and not sure what I get under the ply to level it - gripfill?

also, is it a good idea to cut some service hatch holes to the ply for pipework? Boiler is downstairs.

If you do not plan to use an underlay, you will need to secret nail the engineered directly to the 11mm ply. You still need to allow a full expansion gap around the edges and undercut the door architraves etc.Floating the floor on an underlay like Duralay Multitex will add extra insulation. Hatch holes in Engineered are difficult to do neatly and allow for expansion gaps correctly.
