I live in a detached house. My neighbour has recently installed a gate post hard up against my wall. (They also attached fittings into my wall but have taken them down and repaired the wall). They say that the post is free standing but it is actually touching the wall. It bridges the damp course and it will definitely trap water against my wall. It is a large post and is so close that I cannot see behind it to see the brickwork. I am concerned about damp - we have had problems with it in other parts of the house. I have asked them to re-site it away from the house by a small distance so that moisture can drain away or evaporate. They have refused. What can I do.

where is the boundary?

what is the post made of?

pics may help.

The wall of my house is the boundary and the post is right on the boundary. Obviously they can put a gate in on their land but I don’t believe it should touch my wall and possibly cause damage. It is a large wooden post.

If your wall is up to the boundary line and you want a gap, then you'll have to move your wall back...

I mean, look if you can be right up to the boundary line on your side, why can't your neighbour on their side?!

A friend had a house whose back wall formed the boundary of one side of his neighbour's driveway. The neighbour decided to build a lean to against this back wall. Friend's solicitor wrote to them and got them to remove it. The boundary being against his wall wasn't the problem, it was because the fixings securing it to his wall breached the boundary and possibly caused damage to it.
