OK, so I have got someone to fit 5 x internal 44mm thick oak veneer doors.

I have supplied doors and door furniture. Three hindges on each and a privacy lock for a bathroom on one door and a deadbolt keyed lock for a garage door.

They quoted 57 for the standard doors and 62 for the doors with locks in. He himself has said all the frames are very square etc. He said it would take two days.

On the first day he arrived at 7.30 and left at 5. He hung 3 doors but hadn't fitted handles yet. Second day he hung 2 doors and the handle/lock for the garage door. He said it took him much longer because this door was actually 35mm thick and not 44mm (I had ordered wrong but don't mind). So now he is going to have to work Monday to finish off. I feel like I'm going to get charged more as it has taken him longer than expected.

Is this how long it usually take to hang doors?

By the way. His work seems very good - all gaps around the doors seem to be spot on and he's very neat and tidy.

Thanks

If he has made a really neat job of fitting 5 oak veneer doors without any damage or break out you've got a very skilled 2nd fix chippie.

Maybe carpenters are cheaper in Norfolk but £150 per day is cheap these days in my area Sussex / Surrey and they would rarely be doing any longer than 8.00 to 4.00

I know you have no contractual obligation to pay him more, but if he has done a cracking job....give him a bit more even if he doesn't ask.

I can tell you from experience many carpenters cant do a very neat job of fitting veneered doors.

Oh OK great thanks. I am impressed with the work just don't know how long these things take etc. Tbh I never thought it would take a pro longer than two days but he doesn't seem to be in a rush.

Cheers

He finished today. So it took him at least 2. 5 days to do the 5 doors - great job too. He went out today to get new doorstops for two of the doors as the old ones needed moving and broke. He filled in holes in the new frame in knots etc. Swept and hoovered all areas and took all rubbish away. Plus he left me a 35mm hindge cutter for a kitchen door I want to do.

He charged me £318 but wants cash if possible!!

So it’s great work, good price, nice guy - but a tax dodger. Well you really can’t have it all.

Tell him you think the NHS needs all the money it can get right now so you’re going to pay him legitimately, but then round it up to £320 for a job well done and as it’s xmas.

Why does wanting cash make him a tax dodger?

Perhaps the client is dodgy and he wants to make sure he gets paid.

That chippie's tax affairs are not the client's business. Else he should have clarified things before employing him.

These days we have almost-instant bank to bank transfers. Even cash has a risk if the client is dodgy, the notes could be fake.

A client can make anything about the tradesman a factor in whether they ask them back in the future, recommend them to others etc. Personally, I’m self-employed and I pay all my tax because I think our public services need the money; I prefer to support tradesmen who think the same way, when I can find them.

It's the classic mistake to associate cash with criminal, dodgy or cowboy builders, and that's simply not the case. That was a key aim (hidden objective) of the first of the Government's quality schemes back in the late 90's, and it failed miserably.

And it's also a mistake (big, big mistake) to think that the public services need your tax money, when so much is syphoned, frittered and wasted on other schemes. Your money for instance may well be going to support a goat herding study in a village 10k miles away. Let alone the fact that the little builder is paying proportionately more tax than some rich [insert profession] person purely because the little builder can't afford the best accountants to know the best tax avoidance schemes.

But I suppose we are veering OT.

So why do you believe tradesmen sometimes say they prefer cash, or offer a discount for cash?

That’s also something I’m very happy for my tax money to support.

good price if he's made a cracking job of it, a wee Brucie bonus as well goes a long way, cash is king, let him decide on what payments he wants

It's of course right to pay taxes, just a shame our governments p1ss so much of it against the wall in wasted procurements etc etc.

Cheap.
I charge 100 per door if frames are not renewed.
Might give a discount if old frames are already removed and i install new frames.

Same reason the councils offer a 50% reduction if you pay your parking fine in 14 days.

Avoiding ATM charges.

Shopping at Aldi

Being able to tip the waitress down the pub, or the DPD guy or the .... hang on tip in cash? :cautious:
