Carpet advice needed. Where to buy?

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about carpets? Would seem like an easy subject but it seems impossible to compare each carpet at the various carpet sheds to know which is best.

For example, how do I compare if a twist pile from carpet right for £20/m² is better or worse than one from another carpet shop for the same price.

The specifications on the back of each sample contain scant information to allow you to make a sensible comparison. I guess this is by design to make it hard to gauge the quality you are getting. Additionally, they don't tell you the actual manufacturer of the carpet and I would bet each store has it's own "specification" from the manufacturers.

Based on that, could anyone recommend a good brand or carpet I could potentially buy online then get a local fitter to fit?

Think I am looking for a polypropylene twist pile to go into bed rooms and the hall stares and landing. Needs to be stain resistant and not too deep so that it does not compress underfoot. I would really prefer something with a wool blend but having a young family I don't think it's an option.

Additionally I need to think about underlay. I read you can get wool based underlay that helps to keep the room a bit warmer. Has anyone used anything like this? Again any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Mohawk/Lano Lounge or sometimes known as Freedom.

Will out perform any of the polyprop based yarns, costs a bit more but simply superb.

Go to a quality independent who will explain the differences in the quality of the fibres, it makes a massive difference to wear and appearance retention.

The Victoria Heartland and First Impressions is probably the best value at that low £20m2 price point.

Opted for the Victoria Heartland freedom in the end from an independent retailer.
