I've just received the below e-mail notification relating to a non-existent message oin an 8-year old thread! Do I take it that there was a message posted recently and that the mods removed it pretty swiftly?

Ihad one of those a little while ago and when i clicked on the 'view this thread' there were no new replies. By chance I'd pressed 'PrtSc' as part of my earlier reply and I could see a 'Like' or 'Thanks' had been added.

Yes, I've experienced similar in the past.

However, in today's case, the person who (per e-mail) had allegedly replied to the thread ("msitekkie") had never contributed (visibly to us) to the thread. Hence, as I said, I suspect he did post to the thread today but, for whatever reason, the mods rapidly removed the message from view.

They normally ammend the deleted post to that effect?

MOD: It was a reply to an 8(?) year old thread and as such it went on the moderation queue. The post was deleted and the user informed to start a new thread. Bit of a forum defect if you ask me as you shouldn't have received a notification until it was approved. Mystery solved for you.

Thanks for the clarification.

Useful to know replies to old posts go to mods.

Thanks for the clarification. It's actually not the first time that I've received an e-mail notification relating to a message that wasn't (and never became) visible to me - so, as you say, perhaps something is not quite perfect about the forum's software!

I've also seen this in the past where a spammer has joined a forum and spammed across loads of threads - so you get notifications. By the time you go to read the new replies, the mods have kicked the spammer off and deleted all their posts so there's nothing new to see.

They are on the the ball those Mods.

hey, Happy New Year to them and to you lot. 2021 Has to be better than ‘20, hasn’t it?

... also to you, and everyone else, from me!

One might hope so, but I'm certainly not holding my breath, since anything 'better' is probably a long way off - things are currently very much going in the wrong direction, and if they are mad enough to re-open schools (and not tighten other things even further) that's probably not going to change any time soon.

My personal hope is that the latter half of 2021 might possibly see us moving somewhat towards a situation which is slightly more recognisable as 'normality', but I'm not necessarily holding my breath for even that.

At an individual level, I can but very much hope that everyone reading this manages to stay healthy.
